tailgates

i have a 72 pickup with no tailgate. i have been concedering lately just fabricating my own tail gate. any body have any ideas as to what would look cool? i have seen a few people use chorme chains and even a couple people cut a bowetie out of wood.

In my opinion, any tailgate out of wood is not a good idea. It wouldn't last if you used the truck for hauling and after a year or so it would look sorta ghetto.

Now if it was strictly a show truck and it was done professionally with some type of hardwood it may look okay.

My preference would be chrome pipes or square tubing for a much cleaner look and drag reduction.

today i had the idea to make it like a solid plate and have a 3D chevy symbol on it like actually have it punched in or maybe welded to the flat sheet metal. but i would still like to have that lip that is on the stock gate. any ideas of how i could accomplish this?

Probably a sheet metal fabricator could do that. Maybe even weld a pipe on top and have a shop roll the sheet metal over it for strength. It probably would look like a stepside gate.
