which way? drum shoes
I'm replacing the shoes on my '68, but unfortunately I didn't remember to take pictures before I tore everything apart, now I've got the new shoes and spring kits but I'm not sure which shoe goes where. there one with shorter braking surface and one with longer braking surface, in the back I put the short ones towards the front based on the instructions I used, but I'm not sure if the front is the same way, and I don't have any instructions for the fronts.
here's the website I used for the rears: http://www.pbase.com/nufsed/drumbrake thanks yall

Re: which way? drum shoes
If memory serves me correctly, the shoe with the shorter lining always goes towards the front of the vehicle (front and rear), but it's been a while. Hopefully, someone who's worked on them recently will chime in soon.
Good luck, Dennis |

Re: which way? drum shoes
Dennis has it correct, short shoe always goes towards the front of the vehicle.

Re: which way? drum shoes
Yep, that's it. The primary shoe (short) goes towards the front while the secondary (long) goes towards the back.

"The longer shoe always goes towards the rear of the car and the short shoe towards the front."
http://autorepair.about.com/cs/doity...a031701a_2.htm "There is a short and a long shoe for each side of the vehicle. The longer shoe faces the rear of the vehicle." http://www.off-roadweb.com/tech/1003..._to/index.html Seems to be unanimous...

factory service manual old school mechanics have handy to do jobs properly
most board vendors sell them at a very cheap price, a great tool for doing the job right the first time
