72 windshield rubber replacement????

Sorry if this has been brought up before but I searched and didn't seem to find and anwser to my question so I was hoping someone esle might know...
I have a 69 and a 72 and I was wondering if the windshields would swap...that being my first questions and my second being, can I just use the regular rubber seal without the chrome strip in it to replace the one in the 72 if it has and existing seal with the chrome strip? any knowleged would be appriciated.

Re: 72 windshield rubber replacement????

**Disclaimer - I haven't had to do this yet - so if you use these and break the w/s - you have been warned**

Try the instructions here - if your w/s rubber is soft still - it should be pretty easy.

Re: 72 windshield rubber replacement????

I have used the garden hose method to hold the gasket from the inside and it works like a charm!

Re: 72 windshield rubber replacement????

I did just what you are thinking of. I took an decent windshield out of a 72 and put it into a 69.

The rubber on the 72 was very hard and old so I cut the rubber to get the windshield out without breaking it. I simply cut the outside lip off along the top and part of the sides before the windshield came out.

I used the method described in the post above to remove the broken windshield from the 69. The rubber was real soft and it popped right out.

I used the cord method to install the windshield into the 69. Probably took an hour total.

Both were non chrome trim windshields.

If both rubbers are hard you probably want to buy a new rubber seal.

Re: 72 windshield rubber replacement????

I've put in a lot of windshields in 67-72 trucks. It's really straightforward for a do it yourself type of guy with a little patience. Once you've done one, you will be very happy you learned how and don't have to pay a glass guy from now on.

Re: 72 windshield rubber replacement????

i know its not the windshield, but i tried to install a sliding rear window in my pickup last night, and it didn't go too swell. i can't figure out if the chrome goes in before or after, i said before, my grandpa said after. tried both ways with the string method and neither one worked. whats up?
