I'm looking for a posi unit for my 72 c10. Can a unit from a latter model truck,73 on, work or does it need to be from a 67-72?

I'm not answering your specific question because I don't know rear ends that well but craigslist is a great place to look if you are not going new. Picked mine up for $125 and it works perfect.

12 bolt truck will work from later years. BUT....most of the 73 and up are Gov-Lok (aka Gov-Bomb) and not Eaton style like the 67-72. What do you plan on doing with the truck? I would just buy a new Eaton posi or somebody elses (Yukon?) clutch style rebuildable posi. If you get a 67-72 OEM posi, most likely it will need clutches which run about $100 for the complete set so you have to add that to the cost. But if you can get a complete rear for the right price with the posi, go for it!

I have had both stock Gm, and a Auburn. The Auburn is a tough quality piece and worth the money. The Stock posi in my 4x4 had broken clutches when I pulled it apart to rebuild and the stock posi in my bb truck was not in much better shape, but after rebuilding them both they seem to be ok. I dont believe the stock clutches are available from Gm anymore so you would have to buy from Randy's Ring and pinion or Richmond.

I bought a brand new eaton posi from rearendparts.com. They had it listed at like $4__, I talked them down to $385. Got quoted to install it and 3.73 gears (i have all bearings and seals) for $250.

Get an eaton if your going to even start to make any power or just want a reliable posi unit. I've seen alot of auburns go boom!

From what I've been told is the Auburn units are not rebuild-able but the Eaton units are. That's just what I've heard though.
