Removing engine/trans/transfercase

Ok, so this is the first tim I am removing the drivetrain on one of these trucks. It's a 70 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban. I have the complete front end removed, all accessories accept PS pump (lines and PS Box are off) I also have the rear drive shaft out.

What would be the best way to remove this? Right now I am thinking of disconnecting the transmission (TH350) from the transfer case and them pulling the motor/trans out together, and then go back for the transfer case, since this would give me better access to the bolts for the front drive shaft.

Would there be a better way? And what is the best way to remove the shift mechanism from the frame/transmission?

The truck is still on a trailer, so I don't have the height to get all three out together I don't believe.

I am hopefully going to be trying this tonight so I can get the truck gone tomorrow.

Ok, I can do that. I plan to use the hoist to remove each piece. I figured it would be easier to do the motor and trans so I wouldn't have to support each piece separately.

Since it's on a trailer, I think I'll use the hoist to lower the Transfer case down to the ground and slide it out that way.

i would have to agree. when i did it (it was a manual trans) i had the cab off and i separated the motor then pulled the trans/t. case as a unit. but if your not junking the truck, and not planning on a frame off resto, pull them all seperately

When you separate the motor and trans be prepared for a boatload of tranny fluid to spill out of the torque converter.

ended up pulling engine and trans together due to time and space available. Since it was on the trailer, I couldn't get anything to support the trans alone. I also couldn't cut the body cause I sold it.

I ran out of time though, so the transfer case still needs to come out. then the cross members and the rear bumper, then the new owner of the body will be coming to get it.

When I did the C20 I just pulled the driveshaft, then removed the hood, then engine and trans came out together all in one piece and it was a BB 427 with TH350.

So you could pull the transfercase then yank the rest out the top.

Well, this is how it sits right now looking out my parents second floor window. Got to remove the transfer case, crossmembers, and rear bumper, then the rest is going to a guy up the street and he's putting the body on a 78 4x4 suburban frame.

I'm thinking of unbolting the transfer case, and pulling the engine and tranny together.

Nomatter what the transfer case is i would pull the transfer case seperate from the rest unless i had a nice setup under the trans and tcase. A 205 wieghs alot and a 203 is a lot more than a 205. No way to leave all three connected. But i see you done did it the way i would have done it.

When I had access to a regular shop, I pulled the 3-speed with the NP205 attached. I had a buddy help who had done it before and a really good tranny jack with an adapter on top of it that could hold up the assembly when it was loose from its moorings.

I put the th350/NP205 in the same way. We bolted it together on the ground then used a cherry picker to set it on the tranny jack. It still took three of us to wrestle that pig into its spot and bolt it down.

Without the shop with all that equipment, I would remove the engine first leaving the tranny and t-case alone. Then I would unbolt the tranny from the t-case and pull it out the front. Then that pig of a transfer case could be dealt with one-on-one.

With an automatic, there is no way I would try to separate the trans from the engine still in the truck. And it gets even worse when you try to reassemble them. Unbolt the transfer case and pull the engine and trans together. With a manual, unbolt the trans from the bellhousing and pull the bellhousing with the engine.
