Installing woodgrain glove box

I have an existing woodgrain glove box, and I ordered the "decals" before I found out what a pain/junk they are. Do I need to remove the old backing on the glovebox before I put the new one on? Or would the new one just go right over the old one to add some rigidity to it?


As far as woodgrain inserts, is everyone leaving the backing on them for strength and just using 3m or contact cement?

I found out the hard way just like you that the decals aren't good, so I threw them on the tool box. There is a guy by the name of Gary Terry, aka Cheyenne Superman that does restorations on them. You might try a search for his info. I'm not sure if he's a supporting vendor or I'd give you the info here.

I would like to get a redone woodgrain however money is quite tight these days and I cant afford to send those out...

I guess I will just contact cement over the original and overlay the new decal

You need a heat gun as well. I have tried contact cement before on the vinyl. It holds it pretty good, but you need to heat up the vinyl and stretch it a little bit, as it will still want to shrink a little in the heat. I am restoring some myself with some NOS woodgrain. Trevor

So do I heat it up first then apply the contact cement on the back?

Also does the contact cement go on the bezel as well or just the back of the decal?


Do you also leave on the backing for rigidity?

If you are going to contact cement it, you probably won't get any advantage to heating it up. If you are wanting to contact cement it, I would brush it lightly on both pieces, trying to avoid big streak marks as it will show below the woodgrain decal. I recommend that you go in the direction of the grain to hide them as much as possible. After brushing it on both pieces, let the cement dry for about 20 min.- 30 min. You should still probably heat the edges of the piece to help it with wanting to shrink later on. Also, you will need a heat gun to get the piece pliable around the glovebox lock area. I will warn you though with the contact cement. Once it sticks, you can't move it around. It is a done deal, so you almost need 2 sets of hands to do the job. Also, you will need a bondo spreader to work out any air bubbles that it might get. Good luck with it. Trevor

Oh yeah, and you do not want the backing there for rigidity. I have only put these on factory Cheyenne Super appliques and haven't done one with just a woodgrain sticker on a normal glovebox. Trevor
