Project 65 Daily Driver - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My current car is six years old now and I was thinking that in three to four years I’ll be needing to get a new car to drive to work. Well I hate car payments and I wanted my next car to be a truck. Even if I bought a used truck with low miles it would cost me $10K. So I had this bight idea, Build A Truck, if I did it right I could totally recondition a classic truck over three to four year and spend less that $10K and when I was done I would have a reliable truck I could drive every day and I wouldn’t be driving the same truck as every third person on the road. Well 30 years ago (When I was 16) my farther and I put a 427 big block in a 66 stepside so I when I started looking for a project truck I naturally favored the 4-5-6 Chevys. I found this 65 SWB fleetside and the price was right so here we go!!!!

This is day it arrived

The PO had installed a 350 and a TH400 auto trans

Today the top came off

That's pretty much what I'm doing too. Looks like you have a good foundation for a great classic daily driver

Boy you don't mess around when it comes to lifting the cab

Looks like a good truck to work with. I'll be watching your progress. I see it has 5 lugs up front, but no steering box, or master cylinder. Did the PO just not finish it? Let me know if you need the brackets for those.

Yes the PO did not finish the power steering and brakes, I'll be sending you a PM soon to get a steering box bracket from you.

The original A/C is in a box in my garage but I'm going to go with a Vintage Air system when it goes back together.

After many hours of work the frame has been hand sanded and painted. I found a small crack in the front drivers side frame just behind the steering box mounting location and some repairs where the front bumper mounts on the drivers side. It looks like the truck must have been in a finder bender at one time.

Next I'm going to pull the rearend and trailing arms for new bushings and paint.

I think I've done everything I wanted to to the frame, every bolt has been replaced with OEM or grade 8, all the bushings have been replaced, new springs ( stock up front 3 inch drop in rear)

Trailing Arms have been beefed up

New fuel tank

New stainless steel brake lines and stainless fuel lines

It time to start working on the cab, What do you think, two more weeks and I'll be done?

man, i like it 14 months, did you do it under $10k or go over?? what did you do for the tailgate latches? i love big windows, great truck good job!! not that truck will last another 46 yrs.

I used the tailgate latch from MarK and by painting it myself so keep to cost under the $10K
