cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
I have been searching for the best electric fan set-up for my 69 truck. I have read about using a Ford Tarus 2 speed fan as it is the most econmical and effective set up. I also understand that this is a puller fan set up. I have a rebuilt stock 454 with all the stock factory brackets, a/c fan, runs fine-no over heat issues, fresh radiator(4row) and the truck was an orginal a/c truck. The stock system works fine until you use a/c and get into stop and go traffic. I always thought it was best to leave all the stock cooling in place and add a "helper" fan on the a/c condensor. This would give the cooling needed at highway speed and the aux fan would help in traffic. I guess my question is what has been done by you guys to make the best situation work? I like to leave everything looking as neat and tidy as possible. Did I mention I am on a budget too! Can I use the Ford fan and make it a pusher instead of a puller? I do have a trans cooler on the passenger side of the a/c condenser as well-any thoughts?

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
Here is what GM did on my '92 GMC K-3500 when they built it. It has a clutch operated fan on the engine.
In front of the a/c condensor is mounted a aux fan that is activated by a temperature switch in one of the cylinder heads. Some thing similar should work on your truck. I am not sure what stock fan will work as a pusher, but I am sure some one will chime in. I know Jegs and Summit has aux fans that can be pushers or pullers, but they are not real cheap. Danny

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
a properly sized and maintained cooling system with properly tuned engine and a conventional motor driven fan is the cool solution i've found to b trouble free for many years

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
I remember reading on here somewhere that a late model Jeep grand cherokee fan is very similar to the inside diameter of a stock fan shroud. I though i remembered seeing pics and you could hardly notice it was there... just an idea....

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
or do you mean....whats the cool ticket......
I just did the jeep fan install last weekend. Search "another cheap electric fan" and you will find it. for less than $100, fan + adjustable control relay + misc hardware, i am pretty satisfied with it. it puts out far more air than the mechanical fan. but for peace of mind, cdowns is right. and i could have actaully ran both the jeep and the stock mechanical fan if i wanted too, there was about an inch of clearance between the two. i took pics, but i never up loaded them. Check this out, same system I used in my truck. I'm very happy with it.

I went with a flexalite and in miami @ 97 degrees with the a/c on the temperature does not go pass 160 degrees.

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
I've done a few mechanical + electric fan setups that use a stock 7-blade mechanical fan and clutch on the back side with a pusher electric fan on the front side. Works great and retains that stock look. As long as you have a good mechanical fan (that works well without the A/C being on), you should setup the electric fan to run only when the A/C is on AND the temp goes above a certain point usually 15-20 degrees above your thermostat temp. You could also tie this into the "high head pressure" switch on your A/C system if you have such a switch. This switch will only turn on the fan when the A/C system is struggling (ie: in high temps causing high head pressure).
You don't want a pusher electric fan running unless you are essentially sitting in traffic. If an electric fan is energized (esp. a pusher) while you are moving at speed, it will wear out the fan motor quickly (usually eating the brushes).

Its about 4.5" but you can use a Taurus fan which is thinner by about an inch and then off set the fan. A flex fan is quieter because it doesn't pull as much air as a stock fan. |

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
simplify simply simplify on a class truck.......
i am running the factory 7 blade fan from my dad's 72 burb on my own 72 burb. has a 307, 3 on the tree, 3/4 ton 2wd, 4 core radiator, q-jet and plans to tow the family camper ('71 holiday trav'ler). truck will be getting a 406sbc swapped in and cooling will not be an issue as there is no electric motor or fan clutch to "give up the ghost"... |

I ran a Derale dual electric fan setup when I had the 400sb in there. Those poor fans couldn't keep the engine as cool as the mechanical fan had (it wasn't original; I think it had a Mopar part number). The controller burned up a few months later too. I'll have to look around the yards for either a Mark VIII or Taurus setup. Maybe I'll be able to offset either one enough.

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
I've got the Mark VIII fan on my 454, cools just fine even with the a/c on in Texas last summer.
I'm running the short water pump and had to trim the fan and offset it to the driver's side. You might not clear with a long pump.

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
Sorry to hijack, but I had a quick question. The winters here can get down in the teens or sub-teens and stay there for a week or two. I'm thinking an electric fan would work better in this type of climate since it will let the motor warm up. Am I right, or am I missing something?

I don't trust electric fans. I'm running a nylon flex fan. Keeps me at 190*.

Are you running the short or the long water pump?

Re: cooling fan set-up-whats the hot ticket?
I really think the trick in getting electric fans to cool properly is in how your shroud tunnels the fans around the radiator. With a properly built shroud a dual electrical fan setup will cool a big block w/AC even in Arizona heat conditions. Members on the site have commented on this several times in the past.
