van tilt column, installing lower gasket/plate???

Hi everyone,

I am getting to the point of mocking up my van tilt column and am curious how do I remove the firewall mounting plate from my original non tilt column and install the new gasket and plate on my tilt? Both of these are auto columns so they have the arms at the bottom so you can't just slide these parts off.

I don't recall anyone talking about this recently.

Thanks!

Re: van tilt column, installing lower gasket/plate???

Sorry to say this but if you want to do it the right way, you have to take the column apart and slide the upper and lower boots on before you put it all back together! OR you can bend the bottom part over until you can slide the boots on and bend it back and hope you do not weaken metal too much. Hope this helps

I was afraid of both of those options... thanks for the confirmation. I really don't want to pull the tilt column apart as it looks like PITA compared to the non tilt.

Re: van tilt column, installing lower gasket/plate???

I was going to take my tilt apart to replace the lower gasket but I didn't know how. So I went the cheap route and had it done for free by bending the arm and slidding it over. Just a thought I didn't want to do it that way but I was going to be charged money I didn't have to have it done the right way & trust me it wasn't goint to be cheap at lease an hours worth of work..
