Upper ball joint question.......

Got my Oil changed and was told that my Upper Ball joints are bad.

I had BOTH Lower BJ, changed last April.
Being that the Uppers wern't changed and there's a 5.5" Drop in Front,
it really comes as no surprise.

my question ....
Is there some Super Duper Heavy Duty Upper Ball Joint they make, that I can have my Mechanic install, that is more up to the Challenge of handling a Lowered Front End?
Any info/Links would be appreciated!

Re: Upper ball joint question.......

You can't tell if the ball joints are bad by having the oil changed. How did they check the ball joints.

He was greasing the fittings and said the "Greas Sack" was busted. So I assumed it would be a good time to change the Upper Ball Joints, since I havent had that donew, the roads here are S H I T and I've lowered the Front.

Re: Upper ball joint question.......

Moog will last another 40 yrs. Other brands will last about 20 yrs.

Re: Upper ball joint question.......

X2 for Moog.

You can't blame the lowered suspension for your bad ball joints.
They are probably the originals,... and after 40 years they need to be replaced.
Also,... the person that put your spindles on,... probably punctured the rubber boot with a pickle fork when they were trying to separate the ball joint.

I would also check out the rest of the front end components.
A-arm bushings, inner and outer tie rod ends, idle arm, and the pitman arm.

Re: Upper ball joint question.......

I used Partsmaster from Star auto parts. They are identical to Moog and about 1/3 the cost.

I understand the money thing.

As you can tell by looking at my beaters,... I guess I worry about the drivetrain and suspension first.
That's why the paint on all my trucks look like crap.

Re: Upper ball joint question.......

first thing that comes to mind is "tie rods"!
if your going to get into the front suspension (you've already lowered it), change the tie rods.

I would be willing to bet on that.....

Which is why I always recommend against pickle forks....unless you are digging for a pickle

Re: Upper ball joint question.......

Get in the zone.....Autozone...... I actually got some from rock auto for dirt cheap, the shipping was more than the part....

I have never bought a truck that someone had replaced the ball joints on the top, I guess the rivets scare them away....but just because they were there for 40 years doesnt mean they were functioning properly, just means the steel was goooooood....
