2006 Silverado fuel pump specs ?
Hey all,
Anyone out there know the specs on the 2003-2007 classic silverado fuel pump? I am looking into finding a replacement pump only in case mine goes out on the 06 I have. Hate to buy a complete unit if I can find a suitable pump. One of the worst ideas ever come up with is the "non servicable" fuel filter. I have seen too many plugged/dirty filters in my time. I work at a chevy dealer, and we took apart a fuel pump unit out of one of these trucks. Actually it was a parts van with same style unit. The van would run fine at idle, but when loaded up fuel pressure would drop. Gm does not service any of the parts serperate, so the unit got replaced. We took the unit apart to find the fuel pump feeding a can that contained a plain old paper filter element that was so stopped up, it was collasped on itself. The fuel psi regualtor is also attached to this. I am thinking if I ever go into my tank I will remove that filter and reassemble the can. Then the fuel would go thru a 97 C5 Corvette fuel filter outside the tank on the feed line that I added. I need to look again, but it looks like the pump could also be removed and replaced seperately if I can find a unit that flows the proper amount. Thanks for any help/info.

Re: 2006 Silverado fuel pump specs ?
Didn't know they had a filter inside of them. Both my S10 and Silverado have external filters as well, does the 06 not have one?

After 04, nothing has an external filter, except maybe the diesels. I was told it was more EPA stuff. Same goes for the regulator, GM went to a returnless system that has one line to the fuel rail and uses a regulator in the tank.

Well that sucks. They're not the only ones. My wife's Corolla has no replaceable filter either... and it's a 1999 car!

Re: 2006 Silverado fuel pump specs ?
I work at a Chevy dealer and got a old fuel pump/sender assembly that was getting
tossed. I disassembled it today and got some pictures to show what a stupid design it is. I was told that around 03 they went to a intank filter and returnless system due to EPA requring fuel connections in the fuel systems. More connections = more potential leak points. Basically fuell is drawn thru a sock by the pump, then goes into a "can" with a intenal filter. The fuel passes thru the filter and out a second line to a "t" one branch feeds out to the injectors, the other is the fuel pressure regulator which bleeds unused fuel back into tank. I will post pics from my phone camera tonight. Inside the "can" is a regular paper like element that gets stopped up and then causes the pump to burn up because it has to push thru a restriction. I may not take my tank down in my truck until it actually fails, but I have a good used unit that I removed the filter from the "can" and reassembled should I ever need it. I already added a C5 corvette fuel filter to the quick connect along the outside front of the tank. Right now it is a secondary filter for the injectors. Once the gutted unit is installed, it will become the primary/only filter. That way I can replace the filter from time to time and hopefully prolong the fuel pump life. I was hoping to find a quality repalcement pump only, that way if mine failed I could replace the pump only with the gutted can and external filter. Wish I could find who makes the pump in this unit. I diassembled the unit and the pump could be replaced. Hope all that makes sense.

Picked up a declo pump and fuel filter for less than 100.00. Unfortunately my 06 truck has a 600.00 ish "unit" that may some day only need a pump. Even if I ever do buy a new GM "unit" I will just install a gutted filter can before installing it in truck, to help prevent future pump failures.

Re: 2006 Silverado fuel pump specs ?
Here are the pics I promised. Sorry, only had my cell phone.
Here are the guts of the sender assembly. The pump, filter can, and regulator. Here is the filter can removed Disassembled. Note dirt in bottom of can And reassembled I have yet to install this in my truck and road test it, but it looks like it resealed well. The plastic head of the can has a o ring seal. You just need to recrimp the can to the head securely. I tested with light air pressure and it seemed to seal fine. Will let you know when we try it out on my buddys truck.

Re: 2006 Silverado fuel pump specs ?
What a deal. EPA reg? Maybe. I tend to think this is just another ploy by automakers to force the consumer to take his vehicle to the dealers for repairs. It will cut out a lot of filter replacements at home. Now a filter/pump assembly replacement instead of just a filter puts an increased burden on owners, unnecessarily.
Thanks for the pics and this is the first I've heard of the change.
