How does the tailgate come off?
How do you remove the tailgate from a '68 fleetside?

Re: How does the tailgate come off?
two bolts on each side to remove pivot blocks and then the straps just click off

Re: How does the tailgate come off?
It's been many years, but if it's like my '72, unhook the end straps and unbolt the pocket that the tailgate pivots on..... on one side. I have done the right side but it probably doesn't matter. Then lift the side of the TG that you removed the pocket, and remove the TG from the other pocket. Easier with two people.

Re: How does the tailgate come off?
Stocker is thinking of later pivot blocks. you will need two people to do this as the pivots on our trucks do not allow easy removal. You must remove 4 bolts two on each side (the pivot blocks- 9/16) and also remove the tailgate straps (9/16 as well) it is also easier to do if you remove the large rubber bumper on each side (phillips head screws). As long as therre is no dammage, lift at each side and it should come out. The lower pivot bolts are easier if the rear bumper is off but you can do it with a u-joint extension if needed.

Re: How does the tailgate come off?
no need for two people if you have tools and can outthink a tailgate and make it do what you want it to do

Re: How does the tailgate come off?
That's very true.... I did mine by myself. But like many jobs that involve lifting somewhat large heavy objects, it is easier with two people.
