We are looking for original Delco-Remy starter for 71-72 402 BB with automatic. The number is 1108418. Will pay top dollar because you will probably have to dig and hunt. Condition is not important as long as the number shows up. Ideal date code would be anywhere between 1A01 to 2E31 ( Jan 1 71 to May 31 72 ). If you find this you will be the huckleberry of the week.

Are you sure that the number is right? According to the Chevelle website ...418 was for a manual trans and ...430 was for an automatic. I have a 1108430 but the date code is wrong.

You are right, I am getting my info from Cars and Parts book " catalog of chevy casting no's" and it seperates cars and trucks. The 1108418 unders cars shows a wide range from 69-74 BB with manual trans while 1108430 shows about the same range except auto. Under trucks the 418 is 402 auto and the 430 is 73-74 454. As Jackie Gleason would say " I am more confused than a baby racoon ". Maybe some others with different sources can chim in.

Jc, thanks for your help. I will stick with the 1108418 for an auto transmission. Dan Tip is the only person I know that the PO of his truck kept the original starter when he got a new one. I will contact him and see what his is.

I have several orignal starters here,One i know has a cast iron nose on it,that should be the right one...If you get a piece here and there,will that matter? I save everything!!!I had them starters for over 20 years. Let me get my hands on them and get #s

Paul,

My starter is a 1108418 with a 1M23 date code (December 23, 1971) and my truck was built on January 5, 1972. This date is in line with many of the other original parts made in mid-late December of '71 still on the truck. I am out of town but I had my son check the specifications section of the Service Manual and 1108418 was the correct number for the '72 402 with A/T. FYI, The nose of the starter is iron rather than aluminum. Good Luck Paul!

I have a 1108430 with 2K27 date code that's been dis-assembled.The cast iron nose off of it is currently on my truck.. Haven't checed the #'s on the one on the truck yet

I didn't see it on the chart but maybe it will help some if I knew what it came from??

69lemans the number might work but the date code is oct 27 1972 which is 5 months after the truck was built. Good find.. Keep looking

Hottrucks your starter appears to be off of a 1969 350 truck.

The 1180364 mentioned earlier is a 1969 350 chevy truck. The one in the picture 1108354 is not in my chevy book so may be some other GM division. The first no. indicates yr, letter indicates month ( A= Jan B= Feb etc and they do not use I because of confusing with 1 and last two no.s indicate day of month.

Hmmm now you have me woundering what its for..it was in the bed of my truck when I bought it..along with a ton of other who knows what stuff...I had it in the scrap/extra parts you don't knw what to do with bin and when I heard he was lookng for something with a cast iron nose cone and it popped into my head ...

Hottrucks, I would buy the cast iron nose. Mass rebuilders assembled their rebuilt units from thousands of used units and parts thus the rebuilt unit may not have anything in common with the original unit. So I will be happy getting the pieces I need. The tough one will be the 1108418 case with the correct date code.

Thank you for your help. These old starters are usually salvage. If you get a new one from Auto Zone etc they give you $10 core charge. If you find one at a swap meet you should be able to get it for a song and dance, but that being said , I would pay $75 for the correct one.
