Should i have primered my motor?

Fresh out of the hot tank i painted my motor with some cheap primer. Then i was planning on hitting it with 500* orange paint. Heres some pics
of what im using.

Ive heard both, dotn use primer, use primer.

Should i scrape the primer off and do striaght paint OR get a better primer? Ive got too much $ in this to half do it and have it flake off in a month.

I've done a few engines, and I have never used a primer spray before applying the engine paint. Just the high heat engine enamel paint. Never had an issue with it "going bad" in one way or the other.
Personally, I'd be worried that the cheap or non high heat primer would cook off in the hotter areas of the engine. Maybe not flake, but burn the engine paint to a brown color or something of the like.

Yeah, you've got a high heat engine enamel but, the primer isn't high heat. i think the primer will burn off in places and in turn the top coat will fail.
Probably easiest to wash the primer off with lacquer thinner.

I've never used an engine primer. Just 4 to 6 coats of Chevy Orange.

X2. Never primered an engine before. Does it say on the primer can what temps it will stand? If it were me I would clean that primer off, wash and completely dry the block then shoot it with a good quality high heat engine paint. I use VHT brand in light misty coats allowing to dry about 15min. between mists until I get a good base then spray 2 or 3 good medium coats. Let her cure for a couple of days and your ready to build some POWER. Good luck.

spray it with mineral spirits or thinner and powerwash it off, then hit it with about 3 coats of high temp. chevy ORANGE engine enamel.

I agree with above That is a cheap primer, If you were going to primer it I would have used Dupli-Color high heat Paint, Enamel with Ceramic Resin, Flat, Gray Primer, is designed to withstand temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees F.. then your top coat will have more of a chance of lasting long without flaking later. I just went with Por15 ENGINE-ENAMEL it hasn't flaked yet and it looks good but then again I went with their Black.

Wash that primer off with thinner and put several coats of the duplicolor. I use automotive acrylic enamel on all my engines. It shines like new money and seems to hold up great.

i've used duplicolor primer on engines and also just the duplicolor with no primer and have seen no difference in the final product or how long it lasts


that primer id just wipe it off with laquer thinner soaked rag or shop towels

X-2 I use automotive enamel and have had no problems at all. It cleans real easy and lasts!

Ok looks like im wiping my primer off with laquer thinner and doing straight up 500* chevy orange, thin coats 15 min. between coats. Then get thicker.

PS, its got the pistons crank cam timing chain etc in it., no powerwashing lol

If you can afford it POR engine paint is the route to go. I have used all of the other spray can types and while it works ok for a while, the POR is there to stay. Leddzepp was the reason I went with POR the first time and I will never use anything else again on anything I want to look good for more than a few weeks.

im going go have to try some of this por stuff lol everyone says its great

i got the primer off and washed it with brake cleaner let it dry and sprayed 2 cans of 500 degree orange paint.
