72 chevy c-10 ran before an oil change
hello, i have a 72 c-10 with a 250 c.i. engine with a 4 speed manual transmission. the other day i went to change the engine oil, and it ran fine when i pulled it up to in front od the garage. but afterwards, the truck would not restart. i put a volt meter on the coil and recieved a 0.0 reading. Even when i tried to jump start it off the starter, the engine would only turn over.
So i was wondering, could the points and condensor gone bad, just that quickly? may i ask for your ideas of what could have happened to it? thank you for your time |

if the coil had NO VOLTS then go backwards from there.... find out where the power stops and youve found your bad part...

It is easy enough to pull the cap and check to see if the points are opening and set correctly. Did you leave the key on for awhile? You can weld the points together if they are closed and you leave the key on. Check to make sure you didn't inadvertently pull any wires off the coil while working on the oil change. Were you working on anything else while changing the oil?

Make sure the ground cable on the battery is grounded to the block. Mine was grounded to the core support since I've owned it (9 yrs), and recently it has been hard to start, would just turn over, but would not fire. I moved the ground to the block, and now it turns maybe 2 revolutions and fires immediately.

Re: 72 chevy c-10 ran before an oil change
If you can crank the engine from the ignition switch, you know the battery and all wiring from the battery to the switch are good. As a test, you can connect a temporary wire from the battery (+) to the coil (+). If the engine starts now, you know the ignition system is good, and the problem is between the switch and the coil (+). Check the engine harness firewall connector first, as it can get loose or corroded.
Do not leave the temporary wire connected any longer than necessary to see if the engine will run, as it is bypassing the resistance wire in the stock harness, which can cause the points to burn. Ray |

Re: 72 chevy c-10 ran before an oil change
i did manage to get it refired after adjusting the points. but it was acting like it only had half power. So i tried a new set of points and condensor, which did not work at all. i scrapped the old points and kept the new condensor. The truck did manage to start. it acted like it was a it running on 4. i did find a bad vacuum leak at the carburator along with a gas leak.
