went out cruzing this past weekend ran just fine untill i was on my way home from the fireworks. stuck in traffic not moving with cars all around me. it started to get just a little hot. not bad just hoter then normal. i dont want it to overheat when cruzen the coast rolls around in OCT. what are some suggestions that yall might have that wont brake the pocket book.

stock ATK crate 350
TH350 trany
stock radiator
stock fan
190deg therm.

What is your current setup now? I would say the cheapest/easiest would be to try some Water Wetter in the coolant, after that I would add an electric "helper" fan (assuming its mechanical right now) and just put it on a switch/relay... that way you could just click it on when you are sitting for awhile and it will pull addition CFM to help cool it down.

What temp are you calling a little warm?
I'll assume you verified the stock guage as working acuratly? (they are known for being way off)

it has a 190 deg thermastate in it with a mech fan.
what is Water Wetter? i have not heard of that.
i eventually want to go to a new radiator with electric fans but i dont know if i will have the funding to do that by this years cruzen the coast with the other stuff that needs to get done to it.

i have a shroud and my guage is aftermarket right now.
it got between the 190 and 230 marks.
it normally runs 190 on the dot.

sitting in traffic means the mech fan is only running at idle so the way i was able to fix my issue was to get electric fans. it has a fan controller so once it gets to a certain temp, they kick on. i got a dual fan setup rather than 1 large fan.

Water Wetter is an additive that is supposed to mess with the surface tension of the coolant to allow it to transfer heat better, therefore dropping the engine temp. I believe that it is supposed to drop 20* +/- off the temp. You might also verify that your fan is spaced correctly in the shroud, and that the clutch is working properly. I had a "flex fan" on my truck when I bought it and it didnt work worth snot, I put the factory clutch and fan back on and havent had a problem since.

If you're between 190 and 230 sitting in traffic with no airflow, and in hot weather that's not too far from what I would expect considering the conditions. I can understand wanting to bring it down some though. Most newer cars run between 195 - 210 for better effeciency and emissions.

Dropping to a 180 thermostat may help. When I was in that same situation before, I would turn the heater on max which helps as well, considering the heater core is a mini radiator. It won't be too comfortable for you or any passengers, but it beats walking and overheating the engine.

Might be a good idea to get an electric fan from the salvage yard until you have the bread to get the new stuff. Just make sure it blows in the right direction.

I had similar problems so I installed a couple of electric pusher fans in front of the radiator controlled by toggle switches. Works great in stop and go traffic.

I also run at least a 3 row radiator with a 180 degree thermostat.

I'm currently running a Griffin aluminum 3 row radiator, a HD 180 degree thermostat and an overflow tank. So far, no issues.

not saying that 195-210 is really that bad
it was at night after the fireworks so it had already cooled down. during cruzen the coast it will be like that all day and night for 7 days. sure i will be stoping at difrent venues and shows but will still be doing a lot of cruzen. want to make sure that i dont overheat bad and not be able to do the whole week.

I'm runnin a flex-a-lite fan with a fan shroud on mine and it barely ever gets past cold, much less warm even on the hottest days in Florida. Those fans can definitely move some air, even at idle. Highly suggest it.

I need a radiator for my 69. Where's a good place to buy one for a decent price?. I plan to put the stick back in it so I won't need a trans cooler.

Yea I figured that by the screen name. As a mater a fact I was looking at one just the otherday. All original. Still had the seam on the outside of the bed not bondoed over yet.
Like I said though I am an old fart so mind always goes to the gutter fist

i agree with the small electric helper fan, i installed one on my nova and it helps alot for no bigger than it is and i have it on a switch, something to think about until you have time or money to do better

i don't have a full shroud on my nova so i could get on the driver side of the radiator were the main fan didn't cover much , but you can put them on the front also, mine is like a 12inch maybe? i got it at advance auto parts didn't cost to much, but that was 4 or 5 years ago
