back yard suprise -
This story is a little graphic but all true. Yesterday, my son (who is 22) was digging a hole in the back yard and he hit, of all things, a cooler, about two feet down. we got it uncovered, and pried it open, and a horrible stench came out. There was a black plastic bag with something in it and I wasn't sure I wanted to open it. We didn't quite know what to do, so we called the Sheriff, and they came over and made my son cut open the bag. It turned out to be a dog that somebody had stuffed into these bags and then the cooler. We have been in the house for 11 years; it had to be in the ground for at least 15 years, and yet when I tilted the cooler to pull it out of the hole, all the juices ran out the end. I cut the dog out of the bag, and here was this white fluffy dog in a perfect square from the cooler, quite well preserved, remarkably. I poured lime on it and stuck it back in the hole and buried it. I'm still wondering why someone wuold do that. I'll bet if we would have dug that dog up 50 years later, it would still be in pretty good shape. I can understand burying your animal in your back yard, but please don't try to preserve it for the ages, because they're not fun to come across many years later.

maybe they did it for their kids. I had to build a casket for a my girls hamster a long time ago. She would not let me put it straight into the ground.

Man, that would stink! All I found digging the trench for my electric for my new garage was lots and lots of bricks.

wow...just wow.
I agree that it was probably in the ice chest because someone (child) wanted it to be in a container of sorts in the ground. at least 15 years in the ground. wow. Hey, the good thing is, now you have a new ice chest to keep your cold beverages in!

I have a friend who a couple of years ago with his sisters decided as a Mothers Day present dig up and refresh their mom's many gardening beds around their house. His brother in law had the unfortunate luck of diggin up their old dog who was buried in one of the beds. The dog used to be a bear sized newfoundland, not exactly a little discovery.

MY wife used to have a pet rabbit, when it died the vet gave here a cardboard casket. It looked just like a casket.

I have buried some pets through the years... usually just a cardboard shoebox and possibly papertowels.
