Dreaded Main Seal Leak

My 72 Big Block C-10 has a horrible main seal leak. Someone told me to basically change the bad seal (two piece) is to remove oil pan, take off the main cap, get a Sneaky Pete to slide the seals off while bumping the engine to rotate and then put a little on oil the new seals, press into place and rotate in.

Is it as easy as it sounds? Would I need to drop the tranny to replace the seal?

Thanks for replying.

Re: Dreaded Main Seal Leak

I just changed the one in my '75 350, it's a 2 piece and it really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. If it's just like the 350 then yeah drop the pan, you may need to lift the engine a few inches to get it out, take off the oil pump then the main cap. I cleaned every thing really well before I put it back on. Yeah Definitely use the little plastic shoehorn thing when your sliding in the top seal, also be very careful when your taking the old seal out, don't use anything metal to knock out the top seal, get a little dowel rod or something, you don't want to score the crankshaft. When you put the pan back on get a one piece rubber fel-pro, way better than the cork stuff.

Re: Dreaded Main Seal Leak

No need to drop the tranny but undoing the motor mounts and jacking up the engine will make it much easier.
