Few questions on power steering
I'm trying to clean up a little under the hood since I'm replacing my motor. my 67 suburban already came with ps, but the motor is not original. did 67 already have ps in our trucks? I would like to replace my pump since I'm cleaning up the pulley and bracket. also, my steering box has crud piled on it. is there a way to tell if it works? and how can i figure out what year this stuff came out of if its not stock?

Re: Few questions on power steering
In 67 power steering for trucks was something new. Very, very few even ordered it for trucks. Afterall $25 or $30 worth of options was considerable when most were paying house payments of $60 or $70 a month. What was installed was power assist in 67. Slightly different than the later years. Best to get a pic of what they looked like. More than likely you have the later model stuff installed. Take a few pics to determine what you have on your truck. I remember my Dad paying an extra $8 for an AM radio installed in 69. That was more than our electric bill and water bill combined.

Re: Few questions on power steering
The '67 used a power assist power steering system and they are real easy to tell from others because of the ram that is used on the steering underneath.
It was an option so not a lot of trucks had it. It seems most people don't like the system and get rid of it and go with a newer setup.

Re: Few questions on power steering
is the only way to just simply bolt it up and try it? honestly, i think i would rather just buy a new one since (from what i seen at oreilly) they are only about 40 bucks. i just want to make sure the new one is the right one. its gonna get painted, and installed so i really dont have room to return it lol

Re: Few questions on power steering
I have a pic of a 67 setup on the WIW part of the board. An original should look like that.

Re: Few questions on power steering
You maybe able to take it to a pump motor repair shop and they maybe able to give you some insight on it.
Check this link out it shows one being rebuilt on here. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...26tbs%3Disch:1

i thought 67 did not come with power steering...hmm. i really dont want to to leave it up to the guys at oreilly lol. well, lets say i went and got a 71..just to say, what would be the difference in hooking it up? i have all my brackets and original pulley (to my pump), and the pulley nut. could i not just put my pulley on and brackets on and hook it up, or is there something (like hose fitting size) that would keep me from doing this?

Re: Few questions on power steering
The pump wouldn't be anything except to get the right hoses for it. The steering sector of say a 71 is completely differant. It would be a easy swap and a lot more parts in junk yards to work with also.
This is a 71.

Re: Few questions on power steering
The 71-72 steering sector and pumps can be bought at parts stores. The mounting of them is a little more envolved because of the frames being differant but can be done.
Any good NAPA parts store can make the hoses you need.

Re: Few questions on power steering
hmm, so my best bet is to take mine in, check out a few different models, and take the closest one to mine. then have the hoses made?
and if so, what year ranges are they? 67-70, 71-72, and 73+? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Few questions on power steering
Some later model units 77-78 to are a direct bolt in as well I've been told.
I swapped my Steering Gear for one out of an '85 and it was a direct bolt up. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=419482
