hood interchangeability 67 - 72

I have a 69 GMC and i want to use a slop nose hood instead.
I was told that I could use a 67 or 68 hood on it with no problem since its a GMC. It appears to have a 67 fender on it right now. Can anyone tell me if this is true and what my options are? Thanks.

Re: hood interchangeability 67 - 72

There are differences in Chevy and GMC, for sure. But, I don't think the hoods are interchangeable like you'd like to think. I'm with you, though. The style you like (67-68) was deemed "too feminine" by the GM design brass and that is where the change was made for the '69 models. Harry Bentley Bradley said all that in an interview that he did in a Classic Trucks or Custom Classic Trucks magazine, several years ago.

I know there are some details about the fenders that are addressed by the trim on the leading edge, but I saw another post last night where the poster had a '69-72 with a '68-69 hood. There was a gap at the rear of the hood, at the cowl, for one of the issues.

You can pancake the later hood, and get lower slope (less vertical) and make it more like what you want. But, the amount of pancake you can achieve, is limited to what will still clear the radiator support....and those supports are different, too....early to late.

Re: hood interchangeability 67 - 72

You CAN use the 67/68 hood with your '69 fenders! The issue being the grille. On 69 and later models the top "filler strip" was designed to match up with the upright profile of the hood. To use a slope-nose hood, you'll need to source the 67/68 top bar and rivet/bolt it on in place of the 69 version you have. From what I've seen, they aren't being reproduced so you'll probably have to scour the parts board here or your local-ish Craigslist to find what you need. Oh yeah, you'll also need the 67/68 hood latch too!

Happy hunting- with a little patience you should be able to get what you need. In fact there was a 68 GMC here in Portland that was being parted out. If you like I can see if the grille assembly is still available and try to snag that top bar if you like. PM me if interested.

Below is a pic of the part that you need to find.

Are the Chevy hoods different than the Gmc hoods? Could one do the same thing on a Chevy?

The hoods are the same, it is everything else that is different. To do this to a chevy is much more difficult than just changing the top bar on the grill.

If you want a 69-72 chevy to have the look of a 67-68, you pretty much have to change the whole front end clip. Hood, fenders, core support, grill support/ hood latch.

The best looking 67-68 sloped hood on a later truck I've ever seen was when the owner "pie cut" the original hood and laid the front back like the 67-68.

69-72 hoods are all the same with the exception of the GMC letters on the hood.

Re: hood interchangeability 67 - 72

The truck with the laid back hood was in a mag 6-8 years ago.CCT or CT.It was a shot of a finished truck and i read the write up on it since i knew a 67-68 hood wouldn't fit with the later front end.It just described the way it was done.Wish I could find a pic but I haven't had any luck.
