Rebuild a steering shaft grease boot

I have been looking everywhere for a replacement grease boot for my steering coupling shaft. The closest I got was to find the whole shaft at The Truck Shop for $109 plus shipping. I'm too cheap to buy a whole new shaft just for a piece of rubber boot.
I went looking for a substitute and found a brake master cylinder gasket in the Help section that looked like it could work.

Here is the process:
1. Disassemble your coupling shaft.
2. Remove all rubber from old boot ring. I used a wire wheel on my bench grinder.
3. Cut small hole in MC gasket and lube inside of gasket to make it slippery
4. Slide rubber gasket on shaft (no jokes here, please) and push shaft boot spring over the gasket before it gets to the fat part of the shaft.
5. grease small parts and reassemble
6. old boot ring goes outside/over the MC seal and snap ring holds it all together.

What did this do for the steering? Was it just a cleanup or was there slop in your steering?
The reason I ask is I have some minor slop in mine and have found that some of it is in this area. So did it tighten up the feel of the steering? Thanks!

My steering was not the objective. The old boot just plain crumbled away and grease was getting everywhere. The coupling did not have any noticeable play.

I may use this when I decide what I'm going to do with mine. New remanufactured or get mine rebuilt. Will add this to the job also.

I just rebuild my steering column and front suspension and still have some slop. I found it to be coming from this coupler.

Can you buy all of the parts that go inside of the coupler? or do you have to buy the whole thing?

Have a look at the Cherokee intermediate shaft mod. They cost $13 at the pick a part around here, and there are always a few there. It takes a couple minutes to pull.

Resurrecting this thread:

Trying to get this coupling to slide of the column shaft so i can remove my steering column, I have the rag joint apart and i have the bolt out that holds the coupling to the shaft. Whats holding this thing from coming apart? I thought i could just slide the coupling off the shaft but its not budging, do i need to disassemble the coupling first? the wire clip out if this coupling but its not coming apart. whats the trick?

Inline Tube, or "Motor City Super Cars" on ebay sells a boot for a Chevelle which works fine for our trucks. I ordered one from them earlier this year when I rebuilt my steering column.

I have a question about this as well.... I was taking my shaft apart the other day and not really knowing what I was doing. I cut the large metal ring off thinking it was part of the rubber boot that I was trying to get off. Now looking at the OP pictures, I think I messed up and should have kept that ring. With that said, any thoughts on where to get another ring or should I go the Jeep shaft route or I have also read where some people have used a shaft from Astro vans. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
