Re: lights on top of cab
Yes they could be had on 1/2 tons as well. I have a 72 Cheyenne Super 1/2 ton, low hump, AC cab with factory cab lights. Sharpie

Re: lights on top of cab
How hard would it be to put cab lights on a truck that didn't have them?

Re: lights on top of cab
Getting the wire up the A pillar is the tough part. Drilling holes in the roof is easy.

Re: lights on top of cab
The 67-72 GM trucks have a raised bump that the cab lights sit on, the easiest way to add cab lights is find a donor roof and just skin it.

Re: lights on top of cab
Not a bad idea. And while the roof is off, the power wire would be a lot easier to fish. I would pull up at least 2 wires. One for the lights and one for stuff like a roof mounted radio, or a powered rear view mirror, or what ever.

Re: lights on top of cab
Does this mean they were a factory option for 1/2 ton?
If so, why? |

Re: lights on top of cab
my dad's 72 burb 350/350 custom deluxe with all the bells and whistles (rare dealer promo) had the yankee 8" long chrome roof lamps. i pulled them 15 years ago after suprisingly finding the truck in a local salvage yard 2 miles from home. someone had stripped out most of it's extras like the highlander seats, tilt wheel and tinted glass. but i always loved those lights, especially with the trailer hitched up. i need to get them re-chromed and installed on my 72 burb c20 so i can hitch up the family '71 holiday and relive my retro 1980's childhood. i still have my first car that was the family car before that, an 86 aries wagon, so once that is restored and sitting in my driveway life will REALLy be retro!

Re: lights on top of cab
What is a good way to space the cab lights if you don't have the bumps? I want to put a set on my 71 but it didn't have them factory and I dont want to find another roof. Did they have all 5 equaly spaced or 3 in the middle and 2 on the edge? Does anyone have a picture?

Re: lights on top of cab
This is my brother's 70 with factory cab lights. They were an option on anything less than a 1 ton(all 1 tons had to have them per federal regulations as fas as I know). Hope this picture helps somewhat.

Re: lights on top of cab
GM usually had 3 in the middle with the outer 2 more widely spaced and angled out slightly. Ford historically had them evenly spaced and i don't think it is as aesthetically pleasing personally. a lot of campers have the 1-3-1 spacing also so its another reason why i like that style.

Re: lights on top of cab
Anyone put lights from 92 and up dually on one of our trucks, I think they would look cool. Had a set laying around for ever and was tempted more than once to mount them on my 70 Longhorn but just couldn't bring myself to drill holes in original paint.

Re: lights on top of cab
Clearance lights were strictly an option on all trucks except dual wheel C/30 which were ICC mandated on all 10,000+ GVW vehicles. The roof panel is special but the lights mount just fine on the smooth tops. It's not hard at all to get a wire up the a-pillar.

Does anyone know a good method for spacing the lights out? I just don't want them to be crooked lol.

My 70 with cab lights.
If you take off the sun visor you can fish the wires through the hole. |

Re: lights on top of cab
Any truck ordered with dual rear wheels were required to have them, and also anything with a GVW of over 10k was required. Not all C/30 trucks had them. My one ton never did (not originally anyways) and wasn't required.
When I installed mine, I just tossed the lenses up there and move them till they looked right. Then measured to make sure. I don't recomend installing them (stoc hockey puck or firemans hat style) on a flat roof. There isn't enough toom for the plug, and there is very VERY little room for screws. I like my lights, but I'll never do it to a non light roof again. |

Re: lights on top of cab
My brother has what I think is a rare one, it's an old Northern States Power truck, its a C-30 with the 19.5 inch wheels and cab lights the are round in shape-I thought they were an aftermarket at first but the cab humps were round too? I'll grab pics next time I'm out there.

Re: lights on top of cab
Not to contradict, but I had no clearance problems installing the factory lights on my '71 K/20 without the factory clearance lamp panel. This was 30 years ago and I ran the truck another 15 or so with no adverse issues.

Go to a junk yard or find a memeber close that has one and make a template. You may also find a board member that has one stripped down that could make you a template and mail it to you. The roof of a medium duty will work also. I have a C30 we are working on and when I replace the lights I plan on making a template for that very reason. NOW....Our current C30 is a 67 and my last C30 was a 68 and neither cab came with the "factory" lights and roof bumps. Both had aftermarket ligts on them. (Probabky dealer add ons)

Re: lights on top of cab
Thats a good idea 72freak! Would anybody with cablights on their truck want to give me some measurements? All i would need is the distances from the center one out to the
2nd and edge lights on one side. |

Re: lights on top of cab
I know on mine I had to dimple the inner roof to make room for the light sockets. I may not have mine place exactly right. I was warned of this before I did mine.
The 67/68 trucks had the style that were on chrome arms, not lenses directly to the sheetmetal, so they didn't get raised pads. Quote:
