Tech (I guess)- Removable Wood Bed

So I have had a couple people comment on my bed and ask how to do it so figured I would post my ideas.




I used 9 pcs. of 5 1/2" wide (4/4 x 6 is the wood term). I used spanish cedar but any outdoor wood will work- Teak, Pressure Treaed Pine, Ipe, there is quite a list.

Then I have an L shaped bar at the front ant back of the bed with the slats all mounted to it. The carriage bolts are mounted to that ONLY. I flipped the center supports for the bed so that they support the weight of anything at the center of the boards. If you want it removable you can attach the center supports to the bed as in the drawings below but not to the sides of the bed- it will be a little heavier though. Also your bed will sit slightly higher than it used to so flipping the supports in the middle should work perfectly. You could cut a notch in the front L brace and rear L brace so that it sits lower, but when all the air (on mine) is out it will push on the wood anyhow- so you may as well have it elevated (if you have air suspension).

The screw spacing it 1" from the edges. I made a jig so that they are all the same. I used 4/4 cedar (3/4" thick) which kept the profile down- 6/4 or (7/8" thick) will bring the floor up a little more but should be stronger.

I used 2 bolts per board and tacked the nuts on afterwards as they liked to spin off fro vibration.

The bed mounts to the frame with the 8 bolts I think and they are completely underneath my bed.

I used galvanized bolts so they would not rust and would recommend them or stainless. Bought an entire box of the smaller ones and 8 of the longer ones with washers and lock washers (still welding them worked the best for me)

i like it, im planning on making mine removeable as well. but im going to make mine like a deck, no metal strips but really small spacing. being removeable will be nice when its time for paint

it is nice for service of sir suspension and anything underneath too. i used the metal to keep it as low profile as possible
