Option Z62 info please?
As the search continues I have run across another '71 shortbed (115" wheelbase)....1/2 ton version. 350/350 combo is non-matching....although the options sticker says that is what the truck left the factory with. The block casting date is 1976 and heads are from 1973. It also has a 12 bolt differential...but I don't know if it is original or what gears it carries. This one is a much easier fix (I hope), although I will be replacing practically all of the sheetmetal and interior. It is/was a 545 White/light yellow truck with a 623 Parchment Custom Cloth interior.
Listed on the glovebox sticker is a load of goodies (PB/PS/AC, Tinted glass, gauges, dome & cargo lamps, heavy duty front and rear springs, blah, blah, blah). The last option is: Z62 Custom Comf and Conv Equip The truck has Cheyenne 10 DELUXE badges (not attached due to ongoing bodywork...but holes in fenders mate up). Does anyone know what this option (Z62) actually consist of? Also, is there a way to identify the differential....and what is supposed to come on the truck originally? Are all 12 bolt diffs posi-traction? Thanks for sharing any wisdom about these matters! |

I am no expert on the option code thing, but you got me wondering just what it might be. I did a search through the archives and came up with this previous post. Previous Post The search option is a incredible resource and every post made just keeps the information growing. You can identify your rear end by tracing the prefix code on the axle tube. That makes sense for the truck (except for the Cheyenne badges) as it has the cigar lighter, door activated dome light, and brightwork for vent windows and rear window (windshield must have been replaced using plain seal). The headlight and wiper knobs are MIA. It also has the DELUXE style marker lamps and DELUXE badges.
Maybe the Cheyenne badges were added by someone or it was an option in '71,...but not in '72 (as per thread). I'll have to look into that one....... If it is not a Cheyenne I do not want put the Cheyenne 10 badges back on it...but instead round up the correct ones for it. Maybe this truck is a Custom Deluxe.....hmmmmm..... I wonder if when a Cheyenne was ordered if it says "cheyenne" on the glovebox sticker...or something to denote that the truck is indeed a Cheyenne? I found the code but apparently it is not original to the truck either. It was stamped: K 048 It was located right where everyone else found theirs...passenger side axel tube, facing the cab. I have the coil spring rear...so if anyone else has one like this, and is looking for the stamping,...check right in front of the shock absorber. At least that's where I found my code located.. I did a Yahoo search on GM 12 bolt ID's but so far have not figured it out. Looks like I'll have to pull the cover and check the numbers on the ring gear to find out for sure what's inside...or jack it up and do a rough 'guesstimate' by turning the wheel and counting driveshaft revolutions. I did learn that 12 bolts come in both 'open' and 'posi-trac' configurations though..so all the searching bore a little fruit..hehehehe. If anyone knows where to steer me towards finding out explaination of this code I'd appreciate the info. |

Lower intermediate trim (Option code Z62)
Trim theme: This trim was a minor upgrade of the base trim described above. A little more chrome dressed up the outside. Inside, the most significant upgrades involved the use of a color keyed floor mat (vs. the basic black noted above, with carpeting only in very special cases) and a choice of "custom cloth" or "custom vinyl" upholstery. These two seat upholstery choices were shared with the higher level (Z84 and YE9) trim packages mentioned below. Interestingly, other woven/striped vinyl upholstery selections were exclusively available on this trim level in various years and included carpeting to replace the usual color keyed vinyl mat. Also, there was a little more floor insulation, and the door panels differed only slightly from base with very minimal wood grain or chrome molding additions.
