What carb would you recomend?

I am wanting to get rid of my quadrajunk and get either a Edelbrock or a Holley, I am leaning more towards Edelbrock. I have a 305 with an all stock setup. Also I was wondering what cfm I should use.

so would a 750 be too much? I can get a 750 cheaper than a 600, both have manual chokes.

with all stock setup 750 be too much IMO I would look into having my stock carb rebuilt, if it was me. Unless you wanna change manifolds and so forth.

funny thing is, i asked the same question about carb recommendations...
and i got a little good for ebrock., a little good towards holley, and then theres the always mentioned keep the qjet.
right now i have a qjet and milage aint that great to begin with.
in my old 82 with ebrock, id go a week from my house to work on a tank.
in this truck, if i got to brother in laws, which is were i was working when i had 82, ill burn a tank in less than 3 trips.

ive heard nothing beats a properly tuned qjet.
but i have not seen on truck in mags, or at shows that retain qjet carbs.

i think that if i keep qjet, then i have to keep the bundle of wires, and hoses in engine bay. which is not so good looking.
my 82s bay was nice looking. clean. not much hoses and wires.
i purchased 82 as is, so i dont knwo what went into build.

but ii know now i want this truck to run better, quicker, more throttle response,etc.
and ill take a cleaner looking bay.

got a couple high prices for rebuild. up to 350.
for that i can get a new carb, and maybe if i dont go with thunder series carb, i can prob get carb and intake mani for 350

but then, am i spending money on parts that will look better but not perform??

It takes more than a carb to get more performance and gas mileage. Being properly tuned, transmission and tire size can affect mpg. Usually when you go to a high performance carb, you'll need to change the manifold, to get rid of those so called wires and hoses you mentioned. And lets not forget about the distributor. Making sure your advance curve is set correctly. There's more to it than just sticking a carb on. Just my 2¢

Go with the 600, a 750 is too big. I have (2) Holley 600's on a 350 Chevy and a 302 Ford and (1) Edelbrock 600 on a 350 Chevy. Just the right size carb. for a mild street motor. Good clean crisp response.

Okie,

I had my Q-Jet rebuilt 2 years ago for my Chevy's 350. What a difference it made, most notable was the increase in performance. My suggestion is to rebuild the Quadrajet carb; it may be the best match for the stock truck you have. If you should decide to change I would go with an Eldebrock 1400 series. Quadrajets are great carbs if they're built and tuned right. Just gotta find an old school carb builder that knows them well.

Some people prefer the mechanical, especially on an older restoration where they used mechanical chokes. It requires you add a cable operated control into the cab so you operate the choke yourself. Another thing to think about is it is one less electrical thing to go wrong.

It can also be used as an anti-theft device. Most people don't know how to operate a manual choke anymore.

I put one on my '27 Ford Roadster 'cause they originally had carb. adjustment control mounted on the dash. It is the knob below the 3rd gauge from the right.
