Question about rims/tires and lowering setup

Hey guys first off I'm new here. I bought a 68 c10 long bed for 1000, with a straight six 4speed the body is fairly clean, the floor of the cab has some rust by the the doors which is common I hear. It runs great. My question is I bought a set of rims they are 20x8.5 the lug pattern is the same but I'm gonna have to use 1in adapters to get them to fit cuz the offset isn't right. The tires are 275x45x20 what size tires should I run and how low can I go? I don't want to have problems rubbing. I was thinking 2in in front and 3in in the rear but I would like to do 3in in front and 4in in the rear with air shocks in the rear but not sure what would be best with the size rims I bought, I bought the rims cuz I only got them 300. I'll post pics of the rims and truck later this evening

Re: Question about rims/tires and lowering setup

I have bags on my 67 stepper and it really prevents me from getting wide rims. I been thinking about kind of tubbing out the inner fender to get some more room. Right now I have 15's on it and when I drop it to the ground, the RR tire rubs against the inner fender and the LR tire rubs against the out fender! FYI, when you drop these trucks it moves the rear end to the pass side if I remember correctly?

Re: Question about rims/tires and lowering setup

Is it hard to tub the inner fender? I would probably have to do it to the front and rear but not really sure til I get my wheel spacers in then I can go from there

Re: Question about rims/tires and lowering setup

well i started working on my truck again. i bought new lowering shocks up front and air shocks in the rear, also installed the new lowering coils 3in in front and 4in in the rear and put the rims on, the rims i bought were from a 2000 trail blazer they are 20x8.5 i had to buy 1.5 adapters for the rear and 1.0 adapters for the front. i still think the front needs to be lower. drop spindles? and from where? and how much of a drop?

Re: Question about rims/tires and lowering setup

Welcome to the site, Are you running drums all the way around? I think the only way you can get drop spindals is to convert the front drums to disks. I know that the FAQ suspension section is PRICELESS with info on this swap!!! Eric

Welcome to the Forum from Lake County!

Heres some pictures of my 72 GMC Short Fleet.
I'm running 15" Rally Wheels with a 5.5" Drop in Front and 6" in the rear.
Front lowering was accomplished using 2.5" Lowering Spindles and 3" lowering Springs.
Rear was done with 4" Lowering Springs and 2" Drop Blocks.

Re: Question about rims/tires and lowering setup

if you wanna do dics brakes on a budget and know local guys and junkyards you could do a early 80's front end swap subframe and all. Will give you disc brakes and parts are cheaper! Brandon

Only problem with that plan is that he would be going from 6 lug to 5 lug and need to get different wheels.

http://www.classicparts.com/1963-70-...info/71-977D6/

This is one of the routes you would need to go to keep the 6 lug.

I also ordered some LED #194 Red & Amber lights to go in them.

Atrain707,
See my above post w/ pictures. I'm running a 6" Drop in the rear (without a C-Notch) and have no problems at all.

I had the same problem when I lowered mine. I used ratchting straps, hook one in the top opening of the middle stake pocket, then took it down and under the truck to the other side of the rearend and hooked it up.
The only thing, you need to have the adjustable panhard bar.
The object is to center the bed over the rearend, that way your tires will be centerd under the wheel wells. I have 15x10.5 on the back. Once I did the above step I had no issues with rubbing.
