Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
My 1971 C-20 came with many missing parts. The air cleaner was one of them. I went down to the local wrecker and he did not have one with a Thermac and PCV hook up on the right side.
When I look at most car shows, bright chrome replacement cleaner blind you as you gaze at the engine compartment. These units look pretty and maximize available air but do nothing to circulate warm air. My questions are:

i don't have or use them, if your ride is "stock" or "original" than use it if not the possibilities are endless

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
Do it. Most people don't have one, and it would really set your truck apart at shows and such.

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
My truck runs better with an operational Thermac with the tube to the exhaust manifold. I think the Quadrajet likes the warmer air during warm up.

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
Agreed. My truck warms up much faster with the stock air cleaner w/functioning Thermac than it ever did with an open element.

Never really get that cold out here, heck I run without a choke on most of my vehicles.

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
Up here in South Dakota those really work, my dad has one on his pickup and it warms up twice as fast as mine with an high flow air cleaner, plus you don't use choke as long, saving $$$!

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
If you can find one, pick it up'; if you decide not to use it keep it in you're shop. I have a wall full of stock parts that go to my rides. Some people hang old signs and oil cans on there walls and that's cool but original parts are an investment.

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
Yes, that is what I am talking about, but my horn/thermac is on the other side (rt side) of my engine.
What is the tin can thing with hose (bottom pic)?

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
The tin can thing goes on top of the carb. The air cleaner sits on top of it. The air cleaner, and other parts are just sitting in my garage.
I put Billet on mine. They cast $300.00 |

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
Had a Cutlass quite a few years ago that started pinging all the time . Took it to a shop and they tuned it for a couple hundred dollars . Still pinging when I left the shop . Turned around and they said the carb needed re-building . Let them rebuild the carb for a few more hundred dollars . Still pinging . Read in Popular Mechanics that this type air filter can cause pinging . Pulled line and plugged it with a golf tee . No more pinging . Complained to shop to no avail . Live and learn , huh ?

Re: Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash
I bought an air cleaner at the wrecker from a later vintage Chevy. It has at least twice the height and 3x the intake area. It is not as cool looking as a chrome unit, but it has the thermostat, I paid $5 and it fits. Plus it was design to be vented to outside air.
