The intake is a whole lot more money than simple mono jets not to mention a 4bbl carb that will not be the cfm you will need for the v8 sorry, no just rebuild or buy a replacment carb for the 6.

Strictly guesswork here... if you're planning a mild 327, you won't need a big carb, maybe 600 cfm at the most, and probably less. As long as it has vacuum secondaries (desirable on any street engine anyway, imo) you may be able to use it temporarily on your six-cylinder.

How is the 1bbl shot? They are a cinch to rebuild.

Re: NEED HELP inline six...should i put a 4 barrel????
Take your carb into the autoparts store and have them look up a rebuild kit. Should be under 20 bux. I disassemble my carbs and scrub them with brake parts cleaner and soap and hot water. Then I soak them overnight in transmission fluid and blow them out with air and reassemble the next day. Trans fluid will clean anything! Ive always had good luck this way and have done hundreds for other people, just make sure you read the directions and set your float correctly, both open and closed, positions by bending the tab that holds the needle valve and you will have no problems. Oh and two and a half turns is a good starting point on the mixture screw.

Re: NEED HELP inline six...should i put a 4 barrel????
i have rebuilt it! the ones we've been getting are just crap...the idle screw is really loose and they just keep failing. agreed they were easy to rebuild and we've like double and triple checked float level and i always clean them well for the rebuild.

Re: NEED HELP inline six...should i put a 4 barrel????
You can put a 4bl on a 250, but it requires a new aftermarket intake. $150+ if you can find one used. If you tell us your specific problem with the carb we can help fix it. I'm not saying you don't know what you are doing, just tryin to help. try to put a lock nut on the idle screw or a little blue lock tite.

Re: NEED HELP inline six...should i put a 4 barrel????
I have a 292 with a 4Bbl Edelbrock 1404 500 CFM on an Offy intake and Clifford headers. Been running like that since 1978. I used to have a Holley 390 but it gave out after 25 years daily driving so I got the AFB clone when I rebuilt the 292. If you're serious about keeping the L6, it's the way to go. If you're eventually going with a V8, it's an expensive sidetrack, unless you can score the intake and carb for cheap. Only the Offenhauser is compatible with the stock cast iron exhaust manifold, the Clifford intake must be used with headers.
For my money, a hot-rodded L6 kicks ass.

Check with Tom Langdon @ "Langdon's Stovebolt." He sells a nice 2bbl and adapter that many folks like a lot. Carb and adapter should set you back about $100 - $125 or so. I did one for a friend an a '74 250 L6 4 years ago and he's still driving it. Easy to tune, too.
Just my $.02! |
