700r4 tranny

just had my tranny fix for burned up clutches.
i just got it back installed it and it wont change gears wondering if gov. would be an issue i also notice that when i did tighten down my torq convertor moved out away from tranny about half an inch or so
would that cause the problem ill take a pic in a bit

i belive the converter is supposed to move away when you bolt it to the fly wheel about a half or so inch mine did , did you spin the torq converter clockwise before you put the tranny in it should turn and drop in two to three times getting past gears in tranny! if not might have to pull tranny again and also make sure your tv cable is adjusted right before you go driving it AT ALL or you can burn the tranny right back up!!!!! thats what happend to my 700r4 tv cable has to be adjusted!!! hope this helps..

Re: 700r4 tranny

11.5 to 12 qts fluid with new converter,is the flexplate on backwards? the raised pad for the converter bolts should face transmission.

Re: 700r4 tranny

If you set the TV cable where it was before that doesn't necessarily mean it is correct. Could that have been why your tranny burned up before? Correct TV cable adjustment and geometry is very critical on the 700R4's

Re: 700r4 tranny

flywheel broke and it pushed my torq out of socket when i was on the freeway.
thats why it burned the clutches up.i went around the block few times. and ajusted the tv cable in between. but nothing. i pull the the tv cable and it pulls it self back so that tells me that the tv is connected on the other side.. im also thinking my governor maybe took a ****. i really dont want to drive it too much im affraid to get the tranny to hot and burn it again.. if the pump is not pumping it wounded shift from revers to drive right?

Re: 700r4 tranny

I've read you can blow air thru the lines to unstick watever is stuck
in the vavle body. I'm going to try this if it don't work I'm pulling out and off to the mechanic it goes

Re: 700r4 tranny

I recently put a rebuilt 700r4 in the '65. I believe it took 13-14 quarts to fill it.

Re: 700r4 tranny

I talk to the tranny guy he said it might be the torq or just junk in the valve body?
Would the torq cause this?

Re: 700r4 tranny

If there is junk in the valve body, either the builder didn't do a good job of cleaning the trans, or the trans cooling lines weren't flushed out prior to installing the new trans.

Re: 700r4 tranny

I dont know how much metal was in it but it wouldnt hurt to get some cooler flush, the stuff in the can, and run it through to make sure there is no metal hiding in it at all. I know what you mean by being stuck at work and wanting to work on something you have had on your mind for quite a while. lol. You will have it installed and running in no time!

Re: 700r4 tranny

if you are having a problem there as the capt says, it should be flushed to get the crap out from everywhere. blowing air through just doesn't cut it. it is like trying to blow a rad out
you'll need a recirculating pump

I would use more than air to flush that thing out, metal filings will cling to the inside, you need to get some coolant flush or just use some new tranny fluid and flush thru it..

That isnt going to happen unless you can cut it apart and weld it back together, $150 is pretty cheap insurance if you ask me.
