Lightbulb Opinions needed: Muffler pipes, turndowns...

Currently my dual exhaust setup has Hooker headers going to a Flowmaster muffler single inlet/outlet to standard pipes (2 1/2") to a side exited 3" chrome tip. (On both sides... So I have two mufflers etc... )

What would be the benefit, if any, to cutting the pipes off and just have the mufflers as the "end of the line"?

Will the truck sound louder with the lack of pipes coming from the mufflers?

Will performance be enhanced or is this not a good idea?

Are you talking about dumping the exhaust straight out of the mufflers? If so, you would need a couple turn downs. It does make it louder in the cab. However, performance would not be any different. I have it that way I like it!

I have 40 series Delta Flowmasters on my truck, and they just end above my rear axle. No turndowns or anything, just the 2" of pipe that come out of the muffler. It sounds GREAT. It is very loud at idle, at part throttle, and of course at full throttle too. It is pretty deep and throaty, unlike Flows with tailpipes (sounds hollow and tinny), or flows with turndowns (sounds kinda airy...almost like a flutter).

I am planning on installing just a regular turbo muffler that ends ends at the pipe...

I apologize for resurrecting my own thread... I finally got around to getting my tailpipes cut off. And it only took 7 months!

As soon as I turned on my truck after removing the back half of my exhaust I noticed the difference in tone.

The truck sounds considerably DEEPER at idle-1500 RPM. After 1500 RPM there isn't much difference in tone, but I'm very happy with the results.

I'd be worried about rain water and road grime getting in there and rusting the muffler out earlier than usual.

as much off roading as i do, mine will probably rust pretty quick...guess i will learn. i have turn downs.. i like the way it looks in the morning when you can see the exhaust as it comes down and hits the ground.. yeah i am weird. if your truck is not tuned right you will know.. your rear axle/shocks...etc.. will be covered in black crap. but i guess if your truck is lowered you wont really see that anyways... so it wont matter.

i have it dumped straight out of the stock mufflers and it sounds pretty good, nce i get the new exhuast im going to keep the dump, it sounds mean.

i had dumps on my stang along with an o/r h-pipe with 2chamber flows and it sounded amazing.

i swear by dumps

I have duals that exit behind the rear wheels, not loud in the cab, but sounds pretty nice outside.
Once I replaced the mufflers with plain pipe.......My truck was loud as heck and it sounded a little like a Harley...I loved it, but the teachers at my girlfriends school didnt seem to appreciate it!

Not too concerned with rust... However after driving around town today, I'm paranoid about driving next to cops. It might be too loud = asking for a fix it ticket...

Hmm..must be the Flow's doing that, because my Hooker Maximum Flow's (Straight through race muffler design) are DAMN quiet at idle/cruise...once I go WOT though, all hell breaks loose!

exhaust

I have 3 inch with flowmaster 40 series coming out below the doors. i get a lot of compliments around and i havent seen anyone with the same. btw its not illegal. some people starting saying it was last time i posted pics but its not.

in some states its illegal to modify the exhaust from its original setup. (ex. single pipe exiting beind the wheels.) kinda like what mike has to deal with if i am not mistaken (wouldnt be the first time that i was), also if the truck orginally came with cats. (*cough*likemine*cough*) but since its on his 74 (i am guessing) then thats not an issue.

When i first got my dual 3" pipes with flows dumped... i was paranoid about the cops too.. but i have never had a problem.
