what vehicles came with 200r4 from junk yard

im looking for 200r4 tranny for my 70 chevy I tried the search button to look from what cars a can get the tranny out and related parts.. does any body know what cars and years I'm looking for? my truck is 292engine 350automatic....thanks

some b bodys(caprice) think v6 ones not the v8

Caddys, Buicks, Olds and Pontiacs too. Mine was in a 84 Olds 88 originally.Some have the BOP bellhousing.

I had a SS monte carlo bought new in 86 that had a 200r4. It had a l69 [ho] 305. You wolud think that would be an oxymoron to have a high output 305 but it did run quite well for what it was.Jim

get the mount, the dipstick tube and dipstick, the drive shaft yoke (unless you are replacing a TH350) the converter, the dust shield, the TV cable, and keep all the hardware since it'll most likely be metric.
I can't remember if a small block has a flat flexplate or if it has raised mounting points where the converter bolts up, but you'll want the donor car to be the same way. Some BOP engines have flat, some have the raised pads. If you try to run a converter from a flap on a raised pad flexplate, then you won't be pulling the converter out enough when you set it... and the otherr way around is true too.

there is a 3 letter code stamped on a small plate that is riveted to the right side of the transmission body near the tailshaft. This 3 letter code is the valve body calibration. My transmission guy, who hates 200's tells me to find ones with the firmest code. If you look online you will find the codes, and what the trans might have come out of. BRF is like hens teeth. Buick Grand Nationals only, but the best for firm shifts. If I remember I will look for this site and share

"The 2004r core transmissions themselves are basically the same save for some very early ones. The valve body and governor are what makes the difference and should be considered a "match" item. What I mean is that the good valve body and governor codes to look for are:
KZF Olds 442/Hurst
CZF 85-88 Monte SS
CRF 85-88 LG4 305 powered Monte Carlos/Pont Gr Prix
BRF 86-87 GN/T-Type/Turbo Regals
BQ 84-85 GN/T-Type/Turbo Regals
BR 83 Model T-Types
TAF 89 Turbo Trans Am
OZ Hurst Olds
OM Olds 350 Diesels
OG lds 307
BY V-6 252 Cars
AA and AP Cadillac's
You can modify a non performance 2004r by swapping in a performance coded valve body and governor. Some can be modified with special shift improvers, but most 2004r experts will tell you to stay with the performance codes for better shift feel and shift points. The best are BRF, BQ, TAF, CZF, OZ, KZF.
The Caddy and Diesel ones generally are the ones that shift very softly and at very low rpm and can be difficult to calibrate starting with their factory calibrations.
Also note that the 86-87 Turbo Buicks and the 89 Turbo Trans Am have the largest factory servo. Its ok, but there are better aftermarket options available."

I bought an '81 Impala wagon with a 305 and a 200R4....in '82.

I've also read from some truck rags that a 200R4 can be made to live behind some strong engines. 200R4 is a TH350-based unit, compared to the 700R4 being a TH400-based gearbox. Supposedly, the gear ratios in the 200R4 are better in the same way that a TH350 is a bit better on the bottom end of the speed curve than a TH400.

the 200r4 is based on the th200 that is a smaller th350
the 700r4 has nothing to do with a th400 at all
the new 4e80 in trucks is a th400 with an extra gear added
the 4e60 is the electronic controlled 700r4

as far as the 200R4 goes. try to get a late 85 on up.. they have upgrades in them. unless your having it rebuilt, then it don't matter..
the 442/SS/gn/ and hurst have a better set up valvebody, but they are in hi demand and that= cost..
I'd get the converter with the tranny,BUT I'd use it for nothing more than a core..
get a new one or a rebuilt one, the weak link in this is the converter clutch..
and for a street truck you want the clutch lock up..
they can be built to take anything, (gn's running in 8's)
the biggest thing is the tv cable, you must adjust it correctly, and spend the money on the correct bracket, if use'n a q jet, just get it off the car the trannys coming from.
if running a holley , you'll have to buy the bracket..
this adjustment makes or breaks these..

again they had the 700r4 not the 200r4

to the thread starter,
only g.m. g bodys and some b bodys have this tranny. nothing else
all others used the 700r4
200r4 bolts in place of a th350
the 700r4 does not..
the 2004r has a better o/d gear
the 700r4 has a 3to 1 first gear and big gear splits
the 200r4 doesn't have this issue..
the 700r4 first gear will alow you to use better highway gears and still have nice take off.. most with this tranny got 3.23's or 342 trucks and wagons some as low as 308 293
but the 700r4 will require a shortened drive shaft and different yoke..
the 200r4 you can use your th350 one if not worn(yoke) and don't have to shorting driveshaft..

In 89 a lip/step was added between the pump body and front seal to keep the pump bushing out of the front seal.

that is not correct, on the earlier year camaro`s it had a 3 speed shifter it only had D-2-1 they where the 200 in them . the camaro`s with this shifter in them was the 200 , the f-body`s from 82 up did not come from the factory with a 3 speed tranny , the od kicked in on its own.
