Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
Nice job there and good to see cheap ways of fixing and doing stuff for those of us on very limited budgets. I hate to put much in a 500 buck truck.
How would the paint do if you used one of the cheap electric airless sprayers to apply the rustoleum paint? Would you think it still needs thinned? I was considering just doing it in primier but if i could get a dark red color like my interior is i would rather do that. I guess for less than 20 bucks it would be a cheap weekend intertainment. |

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
Everything I have read is when you spray rustoleum you dont dilute nearly as much, like 8 parts paint 2 parts mineral spirits. The debate seems to be about half in favor mineral spirits, half using acetone...I have mineral spirits so thats what Ill use.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
Does the paint have to be Rustoleum?I guess the Tractor Supply paint would be about the same? I ask because I wonder how single stage urethane would do...about $70 a gallon. How about Hot Rod Flatz?I guess it's all the same.Just thin accordingly.

A single stage Urethane would be more durable and more scratch resistant than Rustoleum. Hot Rod Flatz is also a urethane. Both of these are much better than Rustoleum as they are true automotive finishes. |

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
I painted a farm truck frame with Rustoleum a few years back, but instead of rolling in on I thinned it with mineral spirits and shot it through a cheap paint gun... it actually laid out very nice and looked pretty good... but (yes there had to be some buts here) it took two weeks to fully dry and the shop floor was sticky for months.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
Nice job! Here is a link to a page that introduced me to this painting method. I guess a lot of folks are doing it now.. why not? I want to give it a try next summer.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
We have a local guy that sprayed an all METAL '34 ford with Rustoleum Industrial thinned 50-50 with acetone.
It looks spot on as far as satin goes. Not too flat. Not too shiney. Perfect. |

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
I'm in the middle of shooting mine right now, switched from flat black to satin. The flat is very flat, too chalkboard looking on my test panel. Oh well another 8 bucks in paint won't kill me. By the way, the 79 dollar compressor and 20 dollar gun are working perfectly, the first coat went on like butter, very smooth. Added a small amt of hardener as well, paint is dry to the touch 15 minutes after I finished. 4 to 1 ratio paint to mineral spirits seems to be the right ratio. its dry and 74 degrees here in Jax, FL today..

I think the key to it drying would be adding a compatible hardner as done above. I'm not sure what kind of hardner to add though. Maybe sleepingbag can elaborate ???? Last edited by ksbrktracer; 11-07-2010 at 11:38 PM. |

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
mines painted with rusoleum too.......it looks pretty good but you have to wax (somtimes compound) the red every couple of months to keep it looking good...... Mine was sprayed with a $50 Cambel Hausfeld spray gun from walmart...primed with rustoleum spray auto primer...then painted safety red and gloss white (professional series....thinned to the consistensy of whole milk with acetone)...........one word of advice......don't use a spray gun from harbor freight...unless you like orange peel

How did you do the tailgate letters with a spray gun? Did you mask off the letters and spray the white over top? Your truck looks great!

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
Im looking at the tailgate, and the sides of the truck. How did you get a slight mirror finish with a roller?

Not quite a twin to the OP's rig, but here's mine, before and after.

Re: Rustoleum Red paint job
Since someone brought this back from the dead I might as well add a long term review. Its been around 6 years since mine has been painted and I have mixed feelings on this. Most of the paint doesn't look too good anymore, but I have a feeling some of it was the prep work involved. In some spots on the bed the grey primer is showing through the red, but its only on the bed. For the bed we used Rustoleum rattlecan primer and for the cab we used spraygun primer. (Th e kind in gallon containers). The shininess fades pretty fast, but a quick wax job will bring the shine right back.
I guess when I repaint I will go back with the same stuff. I'm just a poor college kid lol ![]() ![]()
