fixing speedometer

Hey guys, the speedo doesnt work in my '66. It is not the cable or trans; it's in the cluster. What am I getting into if I crack that thing open? I couldn't find any info on a search.

If you have pulled one open, let me know..............thanx.

Re: fixing speedometer

You`ll have to pull the bezel and lens of first, 6 or eight screws, then the speedo is held in the housing with just two from the back, its usually the movement in the speedo itself thats breaks from the cable being dry and starts jumping or ticking so to speak, may or maynot be repairable. Not sure where to get parts for it, you`ll have to Google it...

Re: fixing speedometer

Thanx Rich....I figured I should look for another cluster at least for parts. I've never taken the cluster apart before.

Re: fixing speedometer

I've seen a number of gage clusters for sale in which the Odometer doesn't work. The one on my '63 was the same. I contacted one of the places that repairs antique car & truck gages and they quoted me around $200 to repair it.

I now have a Stewart-Warner speedo & gages in my truck.

Re: fixing speedometer

I started repairing speedo clusters in 46-54 Chevys when I was about 16 or 17. It wasn't all that complicated, and nothing was tamper proof back then. Junkyards were full of cheap components so I had plenty of spare parts to pick from. It was usually a stripped or broken gear. I'd suggest a careful disassembly on a well lit and perfectly clean workbench or kitchen table, and a fresh paper bowl or plate to contain all the screws and small parts. Whatever is wrong should be reasonably obvious, then it's a matter of whether parts can be obtained. At least then you can make a more informed decision on what to do next.
