Question How to tell the diffence in engine size????

Other than running the numbers which I know is probably the easiest way, but what other ways are there to tell the difference between a 350 and a 400?

A 400 harmonic balancer will have an indention in the outer part that is a couple of inches long.

Aren't there steam holes between the bores in the block on a 400? This is in comparison to a "smaller" small block.

Steam holes are in the heads. If you can see the steam holes, you can see the 4.125" bores too. Kinda hard to see those from the outside though.

What exactly do you mean by "steam holes"?

Just put your foot in it. You might 'feel' the additional cubes. (okay...I really don't know)

Look at the flexplate/balancer. A 350 sbc is internal balance & 400 sbc is external balance. The 400 will have a counter weight on the balancer and flexplate.

400's have three freeze plugs in the side of the block. Some only have two, but there is a boss in the middle where the third one would have been. Casting numbers ending in 511, 509, and 817 are also indicators, besides the balancer with a notch, and flexplate with an external weight.
