Just want to verify before I go any futher. When I unplug it from the sending unit the needle goes way past full (almost to about 4 or 5 O'clock as you're looking at the gage). Whe grounded the needle drops but stops at 1/4 full. Does this mean the gage is O'kay?

The gauge reading should be empty when you ground the wire. Either the wire has a problem or you will need to adjust the gauge by removing the needle and rotating it towards empty and reinstalling. The gauge has does not have a positive stop on it so you move it the equivalent of 1/4 full. After moving you will want to recheck to make sure it goes to empty when grounded.

Allen,

I moved the needle on the last one that I had to adjust, because of painting the needle. I moved just a bit too far toward empty, so the tank has to be really full to read full. It is nice because at a reading of 1/8, there is 6-7 gallons in the tank.

If you pull the gauge, note where the needle is pointing and remove the needle without moving the rotating the pin and then
reinstall the needle onto the pin the distance that the gauge is off, (1/4 as in your case).

Yeah I repainted this gage and I did move the needle around with my finger. Although I never took it off the pin. I was thinking it would relocate itself once it was plugged in. I think I know now what I have to do to fix it. Thanks

This sounds right. When you unplug the wire, it should only go to about the 3 o'clock position...
You could try turning it by hand to the 7 o'clock and see if that resets it or something...I know I don't like pulling on needles. But that's just me.
