Cat or no Cat

I'm struggling hard to find out if my truck came with a cat or not.
My parts guys all say if I had a dual out on the muffler then I would have had a cat. Of course all the original stuff is gone. GM dealer can't check a 13 digit VIN (to old). Another said all 1500's had them some 2500's hit and miss?
Mine is a 2500. Any way to find out? My enviro cops must know but I can't seem to contact them. Of course they will find me the second its on the road.

Any help with emissions would

Re: Cat or no Cat

Is ignorance illegal in Canada?
That is what I would be pleading. lol.
Also a year would help in knowing if it had cats or not.

Re: Cat or no Cat

i think in ont if the car came with one you need one.. and during the early 80's everything got them, i know out here you only need them if you're 88 and newer.

Sorry its an 80, 2500
I agree, what ever it came with is still to be on the truck and working. Question still is what did it come with?

Re: Cat or no Cat

If it was manufactured in the united states it was most likely equipped with a cat. this was due to an emimsion law in 76.

No emissions test required in Ontario for 1987 or older vehicles so..., whether you put one on or not is your choice now. You don't have to have one if you don't want to.

Re: Cat or no Cat

I know I don't need a test but in Toronto they have these ministry of environment cops that pull you over and make sure you have all your emissions equipment and that it is working. I've been pulled over with my 89 Buick that requires a test every 2 years, guy told me they pull over all the older looking cars and trucks and make sure people are not removing the emission equipment for better gas mileage, umong other things.

Re: Cat or no Cat

Just put one on if your really worried about it. They're under $100 and won't hurt milage or power.

Re: Cat or no Cat

Try a muffler shop. They usually have a manual showing the original configuration of vehicle exhaust systems by year and model.

Re: Cat or no Cat

Don't know about Canada, but here in the states I believe the first year to get a cat on a 2500 was 1979. The 3500 didnt get one till 1980. Is the sticker still on your sunvisor? Another dead givaway that it had a cat is if your fuel gauge says "unleaded fuel only".

Re: Cat or no Cat

On mine I have a heat shield between it and the cab floor, it is only a single exaust but you might have two. have you gotten this truck saftied yet ? if not ask your local guy to get you spec'd out. I also hear that they are checking for the hollowed out cats as well, thats why mine is still intact.

Re: Cat or no Cat

that would tell your does it have a thin aluminum plate under the cab. that was the cat's heat shield.

Re: Cat or no Cat

Thanks for the help guys. My heat shields and floors for that matter are all long gone.
Visors gone too, even the sticker on the air filter, all gone
I think I'll take Tom's advice and just through one on and run dual tail pipes.
