GMC tailgate letters

My truck is a 69 GMC Custom camper. Does anybody know if the letters should be white or left alone as is. It does have the Custom Package. I believe the cheapy trucks had white letters. Please educate me!

Re: GMC tailgate letters

I believe the indented area around the letters would be white.

Re: GMC tailgate letters

I know a guy on ebay sells the letters. You could get the letters then tape off the oval part. Should be really easy.

Re: GMC tailgate letters

The area around letters were argent silver in '69 and letters were of course body color. If truck was painted a light color such as white or yellow etc, the surrounding area was always black. The tailgate color theme matches the wheel color theme for 1969. From 1970 to 1972 the wheels went to white and the area around tailgate letters also went to white. Here are some brand new 69's to enjoy!

In 69' were the the bumpers also silver? I remember by brothers 69' stepside's rear (maybe both) bumper appearing to be a stock silver color.

Yes, base model '68 and '69 GMC's came standard with argent silver bumpers, wheels and hubcaps.

Re: GMC tailgate letters

Yes,the painted trim colors matched:wheels,hubcaps,mirrors,bumpers...

I said the color on that gate would be white going by the color rather than the year.Ochre wasn't a '69 color. The main thing is the area around the letters gets the trim color and not the letters, whatever the trim color was for a given year.

Re: GMC tailgate letters

Well this color is Saddle Poly. Had bright chrome bumpers, grille and hubcaps. Trying to figure out what color the wheels should be. There seem to have been black all there life. 3/4 ton BTW. Still silver around the GMC and argent wheels? I have the original gate which seems to have been all one color from the begining?

Re: GMC tailgate letters

Ok,it looked like Ochre in the picture on my computer.I saw it in your other thread and I just figured it was off another truck and not painted yet. It's funny how lighting and different computers vary colors.
I'm not going to say I know about '69s for sure, color by color.I know in '68 they used white or silver according to body color.I can't place a saddle truck to say for sure.I want to say silver.

Re: GMC tailgate letters

You can always wait till an all original saddle 1969 GMC comes up on ebay to be positive. This is why all original trucks are so important to learn from for future reference questions like this. Most people don't care, and will paint wheels and tailgate colors that please them. But if you want to be historically correct, research matters.Colors are year specific.Factory photos for every year and color are almost impossible to find. My best educated guess your saddle metalic truck should have the same argent silver trim paint as the dark saddle metalic truck on the carrier(all trucks shown have this silver trim paint). Wheels are argent silver also, never black on 2WD pickups.Tailgates always came with trim paint, if it was missing on a original paint tailgate, it was due to fading or rubbing off.

No evidence at all of any other paint on the original. I bought a tailgate on Ebay that was a take-off. Been in someones garage rafters since late 69. It too was a solid color.

Re: GMC tailgate letters

^ Either Sierra or Sierra Grande.I had a whole lot of pictures on my old computer that I believe is about fixed. The guy saved everything on an external drive.Once I get that back I should have many examples.still not sure about your exact color.

Re: GMC tailgate letters

Heres mine fresh out of paint, still needs the trim put on. However mines a '68 and not a orginal paint style. I went with a 2 tone paint-black with very very small silver flake in it, and metillac silver rush. Just thought I would post this just for ideas.....
I wish the pic really showed how nice the paint colors are.
