MonoJet Questions!!
hey guys
im new to this site and new to my classic chevy! i just rebuilt my rochester monojet m.e. on my 78 cheyenne 292 and im having some tuning issues being as i am only 20 and the truck is well older then i am i figured id be smart to ask the pros.. It seems to be chewing through fuel more then before i rebuilt it so i imagine its running a little rich but at the same time when i take off or make a sharp right cornor or am traveling at over 100 it starts starving for fuel! i set my floats low and my metering rod is a little high! if i lower my metering road will i lean it out a bit and will that take care of my starving issue or should i raise my floats aswell.. i have the specs for the carb im about 1/32 high on the metering rod and 1/16 low on the floats.. will the specs that came with the rebuild kit be best or does anyone have any better settings? But being as i bought the truck for 500 bucks and spent the same getting it road worthy i must say im really impressed.. will post pictures soon.. thanks guys! |

Re: MonoJet Questions!!
not sure any motor going over 100 would run right especially pushing a truck try the factory specs first. id raise the floats, if low when turning the fuel will slosh to one side may make the low float cond. worse, btw 100mph or kph? 292 are more low revvers then anything, they dont like hi revs.

Re: MonoJet Questions!!
btw if u do plan on racing the motor, make sure your cooling system is good the post 75' heads were integrated and have a habit of cracking when they get too much heat. i'd swap to older heads more performance parts too for pre 75'

Re: MonoJet Questions!!
100 kph not miles haha before i had the starving issue the truck would actually do 100 110 pretty comfortably. the cooling system works great it always sits at a nice low temp. i dont plan to do a lot with this motor at the moment i just want it to last a year or two then i plan to through an 8 in the truck well i rebuild the 292. just out of curiosity how common is a 78 cheyenne 20 with a 292

Re: MonoJet Questions!!
so iv set my float as high as it can go without flooding my carb and it only starves for fuel when i push 100kph before i rebuilt it she did 130! the needle that i took out of the carb didnt have a rubber tip the one i put in does.. this float the needle isnt clipped to the float and opens off the pressure from the gas (wierd but the only way it works) so if i swap back to my old needle do you think that will work any maybe just the rubber on the new one is making it to hard to open causing the gas to come in to slow? please give me your feed back im sick of opening it up! other then that this 32 year old never been rebuilt motor is running smooth as can be... thanks guys!!

Re: MonoJet Questions!!
100 kph= 62 mph
130 kph= 80 mph I rebuilt my mono on my 250 and basically set it up to spec. No trouble cruising at 70 mph. Your gearing may be different so a tach would help in determining how hard the engine is working. You may also want to check your pump fuel flow output and check for any restrictions like clogged fuel filters or bad fuel hoses. Pump output should be around 4.5 to 6 psi and pump at least 1 pint in 30 seconds or less. Here's a good site. It's for 75 to 80 something trucks but should be similar. http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/fuelpump.htm |
