Need help finding numbers on my rear end

I have a rear end off of a 71 cheyenne and want to find the rear end numbers on it to see if i can find the gear in it without cracking the case off. Where are all the numbers on the rear end so i can start sanding in the right place this time.
Thanks

Re: Need help finding numbers on my rear end

I say pop the case and change fluid while in there. It's easy and it will love you for it!

The code is stamped on the passenger side tube of the rear end housing. Should be three letters and some numbers. The three letters are what you are looking for. The earlier housings only had two letters.

On a 72 they are right here. You can barely see it in the pic.

Re: Need help finding numbers on my rear end

numbers on the tube might tell you what gear was in there 40 years ago. only way is to open cover.very easy and will show if gears are worth using.

Re: Need help finding numbers on my rear end

I'd do the spin and count method if you aren't sure if you are using that rear.If you are using it I;d do as others suggested and remove the cover to read numbers on the ring gear.Either way,you could always dump the same oil back in if you decide not to use it.

Too funny! If you need to find out what numbers are on your rear end, you must have had one hell of a night of drinking

Re: Need help finding numbers on my rear end

I once sat on my son's alphabet and ....... lol

Those questions are always the funniest when you first see them posted. I have seen variations of these:

"there is a noise coming from my rear end"

"my rear end feels all sloppy and loose"

"I have some fluid leaking from my rear end and it smells funny/burnt"

"my rear end just locked up on me the other day"

Om man......my guts hurt just writing that. I've seen it all on here!

As long as there's no "dribble" on the front-end
