What size and style wire wheel are you guys using to strip your frame?

Drill style or the grinder style? Wire wheel for the twisted cable type?

I'm going to start stripping my frame over the holidays since I will finally have some time off.

I have heard good things about the flapper wheels and the sponge type abrasive wheels. seems like the wire wheels would work better to get into crevices though. I would think the grinder style would be more effective and comfortable to use.

A 4 inch wire wheel on an electric angle grinder is what I've used, works pretty good, but fun runs out real fast! Be prepared to get real dirty, and wear a good pair of safety glasses because little wires will come flying off at times.

also wear heavy pants and a long sleeve shirt, when the wires break off they leave you looking like a porcupine!

If you can, just pay the extra and have it blasted..

I blasted my frame and if I do another I will bring it to someone that sandblasts.

Dont wear baggy shirts and lock the drill trigger down, i knew i was going to get dirty so i wore a old shirt that was from my fatter days and i was working on a set of rims and using a wheel wire brush with a heavy duty drill and my figer was getting tired and long story short i put the trigger in the lock position and when i was doing it someone called my name and i looked to see who it was and the drill jumped and grabbed my shirt, ripped out of my hand and the drill handle was beating the heck out of my

it was for a good laugh but wasnt to funny after all the adrenline wore off

We have a big sand blaster at the farm but the weather is not cooperating with me at this time and I am getting anxious. I'm just looking for alternatives at this point and do not want to use a chemical stripper.

I used both the flap disc and sponge type stripper on my 4 inch angle grinder and it worked great! You will get dirty but it beats having little wires all over. Use the wire wheel to get the inside of the frame where the others can't reach. And good safety glasses are a must!

USE A RESPIRATOR, your yearly dosage of rust inhallation can easily be maxed out by doing your whole frame. A little rust is ok, a lot of rust can be fatal!

I used a grinder style wire wheel!

Also, I agree with treveiger, don't use baggy clothes. Wire Wheel is how I ruinied my first pair of cover-alls!

I don't think stripper would be a PITA doing a frame. Just wait till its nicer outside and blast it.
