inline 250 carb rebuild

hey i just picked up a new truck and the carb could used rebuilt, its a original carb and everything i was just wondering if there is anything i should watch for like special tools or anything. ive rebuilt holley double pumpers so its no big deal im just try to make sure i dont need anything special. thanks for the help guys

Nothing special needed. Have some carb cleaner/solvent ready to soak your metal parts. Compressed air is very good to have on hand to blow out passages. All the necessary parts should be in your rebuild kit. Just take your time and use the instructions. You should do fine.

Carb kits are about 18 bucks its worth a rebuild .

if its got the verijet 2bbl and it runs dont mess with it, but if its a 1bbl go to town and rebuild it. dad rebuilt the 2bbl on my 79 and it aint run rite since and he has rebuilt tons of carborators

the carb says its a monojet rockchester carb, im assuming its a 1 barrel carb you know mono, so next week it will be rebuilt i believe if i have money lol.

have any of you all painted a carb befor, ive heard of people using wheel paint any advise would be good.

Don't use just any paint because fuel will eat it up. Eastwood sells some nice carb paints. As far as the rebuild goes, it is very easy on that carb and well worth it. No special tools are needed, just the gallon of the stinky parts cleaner but it is pretty expensive. You can get by with using carb and choke cleaner, and if you don't have a compressor, you can buy a can or two of the compressed air. All hail the budget!

ok cool, well i got a new parts cleaner with brand new solvent in it so i should be set, and i do have a compressor. do you think autozone or napa sell any paint that could stand up to being on a carb, really dont want to have to order paint

My 79/80 has a 2 barrel. I say 79 cause it's a late 79 that was sold as an early 80 (round headlamps). Mine runs very lean according to the exhaust readings. One day when I get energetic I'm going to drill out the idle jet just a wee bit. I'd like to richen up the main too but I think I'd like to get a spare carb to molest first. When I got my truck the auto trans kick down cable was adjusted way to tight and the carb never did get to open the secondary. After the rebuild and the kick down cable adjusted correctly my 250 thinks it's a big block lol .

Sure would like to see a pic or your carb just so we know which one it is.

Mono jet. Easy job. Just get everything clean, dont bend anything. New choke pull off diaphragm and save the paint it won't help a thing.

well bought my rebuild kit today from napa, hade to have it ordered lol, what a suprise they dont carry a rebuild kit for a 30 year old carb in stock lol only 38 bucks for the rebuild kit and a new float for safe measure. sure beats the rebuild price of a holley last one i did was like 70 bucks for a basic renew kit

I've always used a wire wheel and some steel wool to clean them up instead of painting them. It almost gives them a polished look. I've got that same motor, btw, that I took out of my '80 and put in the 65 GMC. You should look into getting an HEI setup for it as well if it hasn't been done already.

yea it already has a hei setup on it, what do you think of the power put out of your 250, does it have enough for a DD stock

Honestly, I would stay away from painting the carb. It will just cause issues, especially on a daily driver, but that's just my opinion. Here is an excellent thread on this issue...
