trouble getting steering wheel off
any help is appreciated, I have a puller on it but the wheel won't pop off. I sprayed a little PB Blaster on it and am letting sit over night. I've had tough one before but they usually pop off. Any other ideas? Thanks Randy

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
Randy,
Use a brass punch and a BFH to hit the top of the shaft while pulling up on the steering wheel. It helps to have 2 people to do this. Don't forget to remove the nut holding the wheel on!! Good luck! |

x2, sounds real bad but I had a friend (not me) who was going pull his steering wheel. he removed the nut and just pulled real hard and off it came. and into his face went the wheel and chipped one of his front teeth! funny thing was I was on my way over with my puller!! so be careful and have a friend help. cheers, Pat

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
Nut is off, 2 bolt puller with big bolt on shaft, 3 total, even drilled a bit on end of shaft to make sure puller is pulling straight. I've cranked the big bolt as hard as I can. Column is out of truck. I've taken 100's off but this one is not wanting to come. Thanks Randy

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
Randy,
with that puller cranked down tight, take a heavy hammer and give the puller bolt a good whack, it should pop right off with just a hit or 2. Jeff

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
You may be able to carefully heat it a bit with a torch....works great on old manifolds. WHY NOT ON A SPLINED STEERING SHAFT
Just an idea. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
Randy with the wheel still holding on strong after you using a puller and whacking it good with the hammer it's going to take a more serious approach. You've been nice to it up to now.
A bit of heat around the center while the puller is tight may help. Past that I'm thinking sawzall or grinder. Some relief cuts maybe. Are you trying to save the column or the wheel?

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
this is the way all pullers are designed to b used// the shock is what is designed to loosen // excess cranking on the cenbter bolt is the leading cause of breaking a perfectly good tool

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
If you are having a hard time any one of us would, too. I wonder if the wheel wasn't forced on with the spline misaligned. In that case it may not be savable. Kinda hard to heat with the steering wheel plastic right there. Hey,why not sell the wheel and column as a unit? "Will not separate"

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
Sounds like you have a tough one Randy, give the PB Blaster little time to soak in, if its just rust it will do wonders. Rattle the puller with your air impact, whack the puller with a heavy hammer, rattle, whack, rattle, whack.
Good luck

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
use an air impact with a socket on low setting and let it hammer away, then up the setting and continue, whack the center pulling stud in between the impact tries.

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
I know what yrou saying Eric, what is strange the rest of the truck parted out real easy, bolts came off easy. I was wanting this column for the eagle truck, BUT who knows if it will ever come off. I hauled another truck home late last week and been trying to part it out while the weather holds. Hard to get much done in 1 1/2 hours after work.

I always leave the nut on even with the top of the shaft. That way it can't pop off and hit you in the face. It also keeps the top of the shaft from mushrooming out... LockDoc

Re: trouble getting steering wheel off
I was over there a couple days ago and it was not off then. Randy has the right puller, a big heavy hammer and plenty of penetrating oil and it still won't come off. Never seen anything like it, it is either forced on misaligned as Tim said or it has been put back on with red locktite. He was going to give it a little heat and try it again but not sure where he is at with the project. He does have the nut on even with the top of the shaft as you describe Leon. It is a stuck mother freckle!!!
