I think we also have to realize that snow is not snow!!!! It has been snowing all winter here in Bend, OR. You get just one inch in Portland and the town is crippled. The humidity in the air has a lot to do with how slick the snow actually is....whether it's packed or not. In the valley that snow is like the slickest snot you have ever tried to drive on. Out here it's not nearly as bad. I think regardless of the type, you always see the SUV's and the 4x4's on their tops because of what has been stated. False sense of security. "Well 35 mph is not bad......let's run 'er up to 60!!!". "Hey Buford.....get me another beer"....
And then "Hey Buford check this out i saw it on a movie"

Re: worthless in snow....

One thing I've learned in 63 years, is that there is always room for improvement. If I improve everyone elses chances when they drive in snow, by my staying at home...you're welcome.

Re: worthless in snow....

My 71 GMC 3/4 ton and my 71 Suburban were the WORST snow vehicles I've ever driven, nothing could be done to help, even chains! I soon learned to leave them at home and use whichever front wheel drive my girlfriend happened to drive at the time.
Best snow vehicles I've owned...

#1 99 dodge durango, plowed through waist deep, over the hood snow
#2 09 Toyota Tacoma TRD, faired pretty well last year and this but I needed chains.
#3 early eighties subaru hatch back 4X4, outstanding but embarassing

I had a laugh at the NYC drivers this Xmas snowstorm, then I tried walking in that greasy stuff and I was glad I didn't have to drive in it. Totally different snow back east I guess.
