71 Bench Seat Question
I am putting a new seat cover on the bench seat in my 71 Cheyenne. The rod that connects both of the seat tracks has come off. I have the rod, and I can see where it goes in to a hole on a flat piece of metal sticking out from the track adjuster on the passenger side. The flat piece of metal sticking out from the drivers side track adjuster looks like it has a "C" notch cut into it. There is not a hole for the rod like on the passenger side. Something has to be missing here, there's no where to attach the rod. Any help will be appreciated, maybe a picture.
Thanks, Eddie |

Re: 71 Bench Seat Question
Those connectors should look the same on both sides. There should be a flat piece of steel with a spring behind it sticking out of the RH side of the drivers track. (it fits into the c notch) It looks the same as the tab sticking out of the passenger one also sticking out of the RH side. It sounds like that tab came off.

Re: 71 Bench Seat Question
I've looked in the floorboard where the seat would be and I don't find anything. I don't know what the piece that's missing looks like. I'll have to look under the seat of my 68 and see what it looks like. Like I said, the piece of metal that sticks out from the drivers side track to the inside is flat and has a "C" notch cut in it. Something has to fit onto that so the adjusment rod that connects both tracks has a place to connect. Once I see what I need , I'll have to find one, if I can.

Re: 71 Bench Seat Question
Its like I said, it looks the same as passenger side. Look at the tab on the passenger side seat mount that has the spring behind it, that is what the drivers side should look like, the only difference is that the spring would be under the seat on drivers side, but they are both on the RH side of the seat track.

Hope you can get something out of these. Sorry about the crappy pics but I was trying to take them by sticking the camera under the seat... LockDoc

Re: 71 Bench Seat Question
Thanks for the help and photos, guys. I can see the parts I need in the photos, the flat piece of metal with the spring located on the drivers side track facing the passenger side track. I've located a doner seat, and it has everything on the adjustment mechanism intact. I've not been able to look at it yet due to the bad weather. What do I need to do to remove the pieces I need from the old seat and install it on my 71?

Just push the spring back and lift the flat piece with the hole in it from the adjuster then slide the spring off. Reverse to install on yours. You will have to put the rod through the flat piece before you put it back together. LockDoc

Re: 71 Bench Seat Question
Another round of thanks guys for your replies and photos. I have cannablized the deplapidated seat in my '68 and used the needed parts to repair my '71 seat. I have aquired a '72 seat in good condition for my 68. At some time during the years, the black knob on the ajustment lever fell off. I have no idea where it is, but my old '68 seat has one in good shape. What would be the best way to remove it without damaging it?

It should just pull off. A little warm up with a hair dryer or heat gun should help. Just take it slow with the heat... LockDoc

Re: 71 Bench Seat Question
Leon, that's what I was thinking about doing. I'll follow your advice with the hair dryer. I'm thinking that I should not heat it too much, so that I don't damage the knob or get the knob and the lever the same temperature. Thank you for all of your help.
