Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

Thanks in advance for your opinion on this topic I've got rolling around in my head! I've got a 72 Super in the "for sale" section that is not moving. I'm probably just going to keep it. However, I've been saving another truck for a future project, but I can't keep them both. Both trucks have good things about them, but I can't decide which would be more popular or valuable. Here's the run-down (both are #'s matching LWB, but the keeper will be converted to swb). First is a 72 Cheyenne Super with 350/350 tilt,am/fm,posi,a/c,ps,pb. White/Med. Red color. 2nd is a 71 Cheyenne with 402/400 ps,pb.a/c. White/Med. Green color. Several questions come to mind : 72 or 71? Modestly optioned BB or nicely optioned SB? I really like the turquoise green color and it is very rarely seen on Cheyenne or Super trim levels. Although I like the red color too, I see this color at almost every car show I go to on these trucks. Again, I know it's all about opinion, but what do you guys think?

Re: Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

The
71 super should be more collectable since they were not avaialble until april of 71- the 72 is more common and with a small block is desireable but will not have the people pull of the big block.

Re: Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

A Cheyenne isn't too shabby compared to a Cheyenne Super. Color and BBC with A/C is enough to make it very desirable and would be a pretty well balanced comparison to the Cheyenne Super by any knowledgeable collector. I'd stay with the '71.

Re: Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

I think the big block truck will have more apeal to a collector, but I would think that the 'collector status' would be lost when you shorten the truck.

A short bed big block truck is going to bring more money then a small block truck. Orginal or not.

This is similar to what I was thinking. I figure the collector value is gone as soon as the frame is chopped. It can still be a great truck, don't get me wrong but if I was a collector I could see myself just getting an original shortbox if that is what I wanted, not a converted lwb. Perhaps an actual collector can chime in though, I am far from that!

I like a bbc, my opinion.

Re: Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

I would go with the BB... It also comes down to preferrence...If one wants an untouched truck or not. When I bought the Circuit Rider I was hoping to get a BB that was original and not cut. But that's just me as there are others who would not have a problem with a cut truck. My truck as been slightly modified but it could easily be put back to its original condition. Good Luck.

The 71 BBC. They are both LWB, so the BBC gives the one truck a slight advantage IMO.

Re: Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

Cutting down a longbed does not make the truck undesireable- just not in the same league as an original. But I personally would rather have one put together with all the right cool accessories for half the price as one that was legitimately born that way. Plus I wouldn't have the heart to properly drop and DRIVE THE SNOT out of a true loaded survivor.

I'd personally start with a clean long bed truck (doing that right now myself) cut it down and load it with all the options I could. I just bought the buckets and console this weekend. I do wish very badly this one was a Big-Block truck- but I also want to drive all over the country so the small-block will do.

Re: Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

When I was a kid (mid '70s) my dad's best friend had a cool truck- FACTORY Black on Black '72 Short Stepside CHEYENNE SUPER with no body moldings, Big-Block, Automatic, A/C, Bucket Seats, Tilt and Tach. He was VERY proud that this truck was born this way- but what are my odds of even finding a truck EXACTLY like that today that came from the factory like that- Slim to ABSOLUTELY NONE! If I wanted a truck like that I would have to build it myself.

Re: Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

Swap out the AM/FM and the tilt and keep the BB. The average person(people not on this board) will not know much about the radio and tilt and the truck should bring nearly as much without them, especially if you are only asking $1500. Even if you lower the price abit, you still have @ $600 worth of cool parts to put on the BB.

Looking at the truck you want to sell I would part that in a second and you actually should come out far ahead from trying to sell it whole.
Build the big-block truck and be happy.

Re: Collectable opinion - modest BB or loaded SB

Thanks for all the comments. I was kinda leaning on keeping the 71 and you guys talked me into it!! Maybe "collectible" was not a good choice of words. I know that shortening it will take away from the originality of the truck, but will, if done right, make the truck more valuable and (sorry LWB fans) more attractive!
