GMC or Chevy only option?

I'm sure the question has been asked and I did a little searcing to no avail.

Were there any GMC only or Chevrolet only options?

I was reading this http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=440534 and I wondered if there were any exclusive options for either.

TIA

Re: GMC or Chevy only option?

All I can think of is some colors weren't used on both,GMCs had a 351 V6 option and base 302 V6 available through '69,GMC had no V8s until '68 except for 327s at the end of '67,in '67 GMC called the Camper package the Camper Cruiser (and '66)...that's the only differences I can gather at the moment. Pretty much, either brand shared the same options. What I listed are differences, but not necessarily options.

Re: GMC or Chevy only option?

What about the map light made into the mirror head on 1971 trucks? I'm pretty sure it was only offered by GMC.

Re: GMC or Chevy only option?

that was never offered in a pick up at all 67 - 72, not as a factory installed option.

Re: GMC or Chevy only option?

Dual headlights were a GMC only option, NOT available on Chevys. HA, sorry couldn't resist.

Special K pretty much covered what I was aware of, some paint colors and the v6 engines.

Here are some of the paint sheets if anyone is interested. If you zoom in on the images you can see some of the footnotes that distinguish GMC or Chevy only colors.

Here's the map light - pic taken from back of 1971 GMC owner's manual. Not sure if it was factory or dealer, but in all my literature (and I've got lots!) I've only seen it for GMC.

Just curious, is that from the bigger truck section? I think they broke them down in sections.

Seat upholstery???... GMC had some that looked like it came from a car and I dont think they put it in Chevrolets.

Re: GMC or Chevy only option?

I never knew about those mirrors w/map light. I'll be looking for one of those.

Other differences, but not necessarily options were 2500 series GMCs came with Dana 60s and 20 series Chevys came with Corporate HO52s...as a rule. Either rear could be opted. The same type of thing for C-series rear springs. GMCs are believed to have come with leaf with coil as an option and visa-versa for Chevy. But,many GMCs had coils that were not listed as an option. Definitely,as a rule,GMCs came with leaf and Chevy with coil. Another thing that seemed to be "mostly" a GMC option is the 6-lug Dana 60 rear for 1/2t.

Re: GMC or Chevy only option?

The map light pic. is from a 1971 1500-3500 models owner's manual - not big truck. I'm sure that is was a dealer installed accessory, but I thought the thread starter was curious to know if GMC offered any options (factory or dealer) that Chevy didn't - or vise-versa. I have 2 different Chevy accessory booklets (one very detailed) and neither show the map light. I've heard this was a GMC-only item from a reputable 67-72 parts dealer and since I've seen no literature about it from Chevy, I believe it was a GMC only accessory.

Re: GMC or Chevy only option?

Personally, when someone says options, then I take it for what the word means. When documenting things like this in 40+ year old vehicles, the word option and accessory have entirely different meanings, and confusing the two can mislead people. Since this site is basicly here for educating each other, then we should do our best to educate properly. The OP never asked about accessorys.... GMC dealers would sell you sunglasses that said GMC on the arms. I don't see that as having anything to do with originality of the trucks. They had some very interesting things, like the mirror mentioned, the glove box lights, the tissue dispenser we've all heard about, the 8 track players, and the glasses I mentioned... some of these SHOULD have been factory installed options, but never were.
The mirror mentioned above was actually a factory option in other GM cars, so I can't see the chevy dealer not offering it if asked.

Re: GMC or Chevy only option?

I added this mirror to my 67. is neat to have. i used the factory 67 arm though. very hard to drill a hole all the way up from bottom to top for the wire feed so you cant see it at all. if i ever did it again i would use the 68 71 style bracket and arm made for the wire already. tried 6 times on the 67 arms.

I believe that most. GMCs were optioned with the leaf. spring rear and that coil was standard. I"ve never seen an option sheet that listed coilspring rear.

That's pretty much what I was saying. Thanks for clarifying. I'm not always so clear.
