Whats the connection?
So I go out and start my 01 silverado 1500HD to warm it up, so I can take the kids sledding on this killer hill a town over. It starts OK and warms up but I put it in reverse and notice no power steering and no power brakes. What the heck, so I go out and check the power steering fluid and the belt...no problem. It is cold out about 3 degrees out but not too bad. So I rev the engine to about 3 grand and there is a pop and a squeal and everything starts to work. I dont get the connection between the two. Anyone else have this problem? I did replace all the brake lines about 3 months ago but I haven't had a single braking problem. It's a standard Vortec 6.0 L engine I have had a few problems with it but nothing that was as strange as this.

Re: Whats the connection?
Hmm sounds like the power steering pump and hydroboost pump wasn't turning and the belt was just slipping on them. I'm guessing since your truck is a 1500HD it must have hydroboost, instead of power vaccum brakes which would explain why they weren't working. That is definitely odd, but it must have been from the cold, you may need a new belt.

Re: Whats the connection?
Ah ha Hydroboost, it never occurred to me with all the work I've done on the brakes that there was no VACUUM booster on the master cylinder. I will have to a little research on Hydroboost. I am pretty sure the pump was turning but something inside maybe the vanes were stuck. The pump is leaking pretty bad it may be time to replace it.
