I took a butt kicking by my one piece windows
Well I'm trying to wrap up my project. All the panels and trim have been fitted and gaps corrected, Dynamat is installed. I removed my floor shifter and installed a column shift with Lokar linkage to my 700r4. Most of the truck has been primed and blocked, but it has to be done two more times before I paint.
All I had left was the one piece window install. I started Saturday at noon. The directions said allow four hours for install. After two hours following the directions to the letter I was 75% finshed, or so I thought. I had to remove the doors to get a crappy screw in the bottom of the doors, I had to shim the right hand rear channel to fit, the window kept coming off track. Not to mention getting the window into the regulator. I finally finished the right hand door at 5:00. I have a full shop with all the right tools, what went wrong? I go back today with a fresh attitude and the lessons learned from yesterday and I completed the left hand door quickly only to have the regulator break as I'm installing the window for the final time. Man I was mad as hell. Demoralized I cleaned up the shop and swept the floor. I have an extra set of doors, but I'm burned out and kit is installed minus the glass so it can still be painted. Overall I'm not to happy with the glass kit, not because I had problems, but the fit is so-so without a lot of tweeking and even after grinding the door catch liberally I'm still concerned about it hitting the door channel. I'm going to sit by the pool drink a cold Beer and lick my wounds with the vision of how SWEET that one finished window looks. Sorry for the long post.

Where did you buy the 1-piece kit? Are all the kits the same?
I'm thinking of doing this to my truck, and need the input. Thanks, SC. |

I purchased mine from GMC Pauls. It is suppose to be the best on the market and the easiest to install. It is a Brothers kit. Mine wasn't hard to install it just took some patience, which I'm short on lately.
I also like everything to be as perfect as possible so I tweeked on it to get the best and smoothest operation possible. I also switched out all of the hardware for stainless. I had a tuff time, but it sure looks good.

Off topic question, but how do you like the Lokar linkage? Are you using an original-style column or an aftermarket one like an Ididit?

I really like the Lokar linkage. It was a breeze to install and it shifts very well. I used a factory non-tilt auto column. It appears that the linkage is at its maximum angle, but I guess it is designed to operate at severe angles so I'm not worried. I think it will be a good set up, but only time will tell.
I thought about using the new cable setup, but this was much more simple and cheaper. I paid $45 to my door from Jegs.

Just $45? I'll have to look into that...mine works but is loose and mushy.

There have been tons of posts about these kits. I will never buy another one due to all the screwing around and stuff not working right either. You live you learn. Aftermarket sucks, but we keep buying it so were the idiots

Do you have any pictures of your newly installed one-piece windows?
Are these electric regulators or are they the original manual ones? I've got some goodmark doors that might see this transformation. So, which kits are okay, and which aren't?

jays68: I haven't driven the truck with the new linkage to have it viberate, but it shifts in and out of gear very well. It has a very crisp feel to it. I have had no problems shifting to reverse.
kxmotox247: I don't have any pics of the new windows, but I will get some tomorrow you can follow my link to my pics. I have the factory regulators. I got rid of the power windows in favor of a more factory truck now I'm wondering about that? I think I will like the kit in the long run assuming there are no further problems.

I love my one piece kit I got direct from BrothersI installed mine in both doors in about three and a half hours. The wiring for the power windows and switches took maybe an hour and a half longer. Not to be rude, but maybe you did something not quite right. Mine works flawlesly, so I have to say that it is a good kit if done right.
