Aftermarket Intake Mainifold ???
I just bought a used performer intake manifold for my 350 rebuild project. Im running a quadrajet on this, and i have noticed some differences from the stocker. On the old manifold, there was a coil on the side by the carb with a little piece of rod sticking out of it. it has a little cover over it. this was hooked to the side of my carb. does it have something to do with the choke? can i change it over to the new manifold, or is there something im missing? a
Also, there is a stud sticking out of the manifold up by the front main water passage. what is this for? Thanx in advance. sorry bout the stupid questions. im new at this. Dale

i believe thats an auto-choke& it works off the heat of the manifold,,,,,,,,,as far as the stud ,it probably either a place to mount an accessory,or sometimes there is a flexible metal "loom" for routing acc lines,,,,,,,next!

the coil is part of the choke the easiest way is to just get an electric choke carb and ditch the heat choke setup altogether because the performer doesnt have provisions for a heat choke

The Performer intake does have provisions for the heat choke, mine came with a little piece to bolt the heat coil to on the intake. I agree though, the heat choke setup sucks. I switched over to an electric choke, and it works 10x better.

whats involved in installing an electic choke? is it just a matter of finding ignition power and plug and go? or is it tougher?

the stud up front is just an accesory hole for different stuff. We put my performer on a 305 and used that hole for the alternator.

You will have to get a different carb than your stock Q-jet. Later Q-jets have electric choke, or you can buy a aftermarket carb with an electric choke such as a Edelbrock, Carter AFB, or Holley. Hookin it up only takes 2 wires.....

I just found this. To convert a divorced-choke Qjet to electric, go here & scroll almost to the bottom:
