81 c10 power steering box questions
Hey guys I own a 66 c10 and want to swap over to disc in the front and power steering. I know the brakes shouldn't be an issue, but the power steering box on this truck has me scratching my head. The guy who had it said it was originally a diesel, and he swapped it for a 350. However the power steering wasn't run off a pump on the motor, but off of the brake booster. Is this the same power steering pump used on this truck as a normal C10

Re: 81 c10 power steering box questions
Other way around. The brake system was a hydoboost, with assist provided by power steering pump pressure. The steering box is the same as on any other truck. The diesel pump would have had slightly different hose connections, usually 1 more return line and/or a remote fill pipe. Pump guts are basically the same.
If you have a vacuum brake booster now use a regular power steering pump. if you have a hydroboost use the pump and lines off a 1 ton or diesel that origianlly was hydraboost equipped. Be sure the hose routing is correct (i.e. pressure to the correct side of the gear and the booster).

Re: 81 c10 power steering box questions
Sweet thanks for the info. I've got a vac brake boost I will eventually be installing, so in that case I'll need to get a pump. A pump off of a 350SBC would work fine then right?
